Building on the success of previous individual faculty events, this festival will bring together staff and student partners across the University to share effective practice, exchange insights and celebrate progress in inclusive education. An outline of the programme is available online, with further details to follow in the next couple of weeks. The event will include thematic spotlights from staff and students on:

· Mentoring and coaching

· Supporting neurodiverse and disabled students

· Embedding inclusive change

· Transitions and academic support

· Inclusive assessment

· Working in partnership with students

There will also be a series of interactive breakout sessions and an inspiring keynote speaker. We would be delighted if you were able to join us.

We are pleased to invite you to the PGR Writing Bootcamp Series, designed to provide a comfortable and supportive space for postgraduate researchers to come together, focus on their work, and connect with peers. With key milestones such as Upgrade and Annual Review deadlines approaching, this bootcamp offers a great opportunity to stay motivated and make meaningful progress in a structured yet flexible environment.

Each session will include focused work periods using the Pomodoro technique (approximately 40 minutes of work followed by 10-minute breaks), helping you maintain concentration and productivity. You are welcome to use this time for writing, reading, or working through any items on your to-do list. Attendance is flexible; you can join for as many sessions or dates as suit your schedule. The bootcamp will run in a hybrid format, allowing you to participate either in person or online. A Teams link will be shared separately for those who wish to join remotely.

Title: 'Homocapitalism and/as speculative governmentality: Corporate investments in LGBTQ+ rights at the inclusion/market frontier'

Abstract: In March 2021, the UK-based think tank Open for Business released a statement inviting global corporations to commit to advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya, where homosexuality is criminalised. Drawing from research calculating the economic cost of homophobia, the statement suggested LGBTQ+ rights were not merely compatible with, but essential to, creating the kinds of ‘productive’ and ‘dynamic’ investment climates in which corporations thrived. This seminar traces the speculative fictions that sustain the economic case for LGBTQ+ rights and the ways in which these mark out certain sites as ‘untapped’ and ‘exciting’ frontiers for investment. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Nairobi, I posit the economic case as a speculative financial tool through which corporations construct ‘investibility’, which can nevertheless also be reworked by local LGBTQ+ activists in pursuit of their own goals.

Theme: The Global South and Global and Local AI Governance

Suggested Reading: The Oxford Handbook of AI GovernanceLink opens in a new window by Justin B. Bullock (ed.) et al, especially Section 9.

The discussion will be led by Professor Abdul Paliwala and will include a short presentation followed by reflections from participants. You are encouraged to read the book, or part of it, prior to the meeting.

We will discuss global and local aspects of AI Governance from the perspective of the Global South. We will be continuing from discussions in the previous two sessions. While the whole book provides a background on AI governance, four specific chapters are suggested as our focus for a critical exploration.

We will consider a number of questions:

1. What should be involved in AI regulation? (Chapter 13) (contrast with discussions in our previous two sessions)

2. What has been the role of EU AI regulation on global South regulation? (Chapter 13)

3. To what extent does the the global AI competition especially between the US and China affect global regulation? (Chapter 43)

4. Does this provide space for the South to develop their own strategies? (Chapter 48)

5. Is it possible for the South to decolonise its regulation strategies? (Chapter 48)

About the Book:

What prevents data governance law from redressing the widespread exploitation of labour and land rampant across the data economies of our digital Earth? Unsettling Data answers this question by scrutinising the legal grammar of ‘data’ to expose the persistence of hierarchical power relations between the observer and the observed. The role of the modern legal form in fortifying and obscuring these power relations is elucidated. Proposing representationalism as the framework to map these hidden yet pervasive power relations, the book reveals how the representationalist legal form serves to delink the agency of the data subject from unjust labour and land exploitation in the digital political economy. Highlighting the importance of Indigenous/Adivasi perspectives for unsettling the philosophical core of Western(ised) data governance, Unsettling Data argues for the formal reconceptualisation of data as the entangled human and unhuman agencies implicated in its production; paving the way for a new legal grammar of data rooted in relational reciprocity.

Unsettling Data will be of interest to readers in critical legal theory, law and humanities, law and political economy, data protection, information law, AI governance, intellectual property as well as anyone seeking to understand the legal form or aesthetics of data from a critical lens.

About the Author:

Dilan Dagaz is an independent researcher and writer based in the UK. He has previously served as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Law at the University of Exeter and holds a PhD in Legal Sciences summa cum laude from the Humboldt University of Berlin. Having worked under different names with the civil society and academia across India, Germany, and UK, he holds significant international experience of policy advocacy, research communication, teaching and organising on issues of digital rights, net neutrality, media law, algorithmic regulation, data governance, and intellectual property. Stepping away from academia and the mainstream legal world, Dilan currently practises as a witch, with research interests at the intersection of magic, law, science, and the nature of reality.

About the Learning Circle:

The Law, Technology, and Development Learning Circle brings together staff and students across the University of Warwick who are interested in the regulatory, governance, human rights, and political economy challenges of technology in/and on society. The group is coordinated by the Centre for Law, Regulation and Governance of the Global Economy (GLOBE), Warwick Law School and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) with the aim to create a space for sharing and discussing research and policy developments.

Mahek Bhatia on 'Exploring Marital Sexual Violence Litigation in India'

Abstract: My MSc thesis investigated the operation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, focusing on litigation experiences and the potential for strategic legal engagement. Drawing on legal reports and ten semi-structured interviews with lawyers, it uncovered that engagement with civil law is not legalistic, uniform, straightforward, or wholly separate from criminal justice institutions. Instead, litigation is more complex and game-like, with players, rules, advisors, and contested outcomes, in which civil law and criminal law are enmeshed in complex ways. Within this framework, lawyers emerge as crucial intermediaries who balance the legal system’s constraints with the needs of survivors. As I begin my PhD, I will be developing this project for doctoral research. In the presentation, I will outline how I plan to do so and explain the intended methodological design of the project. Receiving feedback and constructive criticism on this development will be crucial and beneficial for the project.
