West Midlands emerges as a leading UK FinTech hub, report reveals

The West Midlands is now recognised as one of three FinTech hubs in the UK, according to a new report revealing that the sector supports more than 11,000 jobs in the region.

The Impact Report, commissioned by SuperTech, the UK’s only tech supercluster founded in the West Midlands, also highlighted how Birmingham and the region’s FinTech businesses have generated £474m in economic output, and are on track to achieve £1bn.

Skills crisis: 85% of young people feel they have to move for opportunities

Some 85 per cent of young people between 16 and 18 feel they have to move for better job opportunities, despite having desirable tech skills, according to Social Mobility Foundation research. School leavers believe that staying in their area is not an option, with over 80 per cent saying they need to move to get better opportunities. This number rose to over 90 per cent in the north-east, Yorkshire and the east of England.

A new Impact Report commissioned by SuperTech, the UK’s only tech supercluster, reveals that Birmingham and the West Midlands are on track to achieve £1 billion in economic output. The region is a thriving centre of innovation and has the potential to improve productivity, drive even more inward investment and foster a skills revolution, if industry and public bodies back its rapid growth.

The prospect of significant future growth in the ProfTech sector in the West Midlands is to be highlighted at a unique pair of events in London and Birmingham as part of the launch of SuperTech’s Impact Report.

The City of London Corporation hosted a reception (20^th September 2023) to highlight opportunities in next generation services in Birmingham. The Guildhall Art Gallery event will be followed in a few weeks by a Mayoral Roundtable, hosted by West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, to discuss next steps in delivering ProfTech’s potential as part of the West Midlands Plan for Growth.

The UK has taken a nationwide approach to education, with world-class academic research centres across the country, but there is a lack of focus on supporting those leaving education within their local regions. FinTech Investment falls 57% but UK remains leading hub

FinTech investment has slumped 57 per cent in the first half of 2023 amid economic uncertainty, but the UK has maintained its position as a leading European financial centre, according to data from KPMG. Dr Yi Ding, Assistant Professor of Information Systems at the Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology, commented: “The UK is a leading hub for FinTech, spearheading innovation across fields such as AI and digital currencies to constantly drive efficiencies and better support businesses and consumers. While it is disappointing to see the extent of the funding decline, it is no surprise to see the UK maintain its place as the leading destination for FinTech.”
