The Annual MIS Academic Leadership Conference (MALC 2023) whosted by Fox School of Business, Temple University in Philadelphia, on October 26-28th, 2023. MALC is the exclusive forum for MIS academic leaders to network with and learn from each other. The second MALC conference was hosted at Temple in 2012, and we are thrilled to bring MALC back to Philadelphia in 2023.

Our goal is to maintain the small and highly interactive format of the conference focusing on the opportunities and challenges facing MIS academic leaders. The conference will feature keynote presentations by academic and industry leaders, as well as panels, debates, and invited presentations.

Inaugural Policy Forum 2022 - DeFi & Digital Currencies: The Challenges & Opportunities for Policy Makers

To drive stakeholder communication and enhance understanding of different stakeholder perspectives, the Gillmore Centre holds both in-person events and online symposiums, attracting an audience from academia, practice and regulators working in Fintech LINK,

The DeFi & Digital Currencies Conference in September 2022 assembled leading global Finance & Economics academics to present papers & discuss critical issues in this emerging Fintech development area LINK.

The DeFi & Digital Currencies Policy Forum will supplement the Conference by focussing on the perspective of Policymakers in identifying the key challenges and opportunities in regulating & developing DeFi & Digital Currencies. In line with the Gillmore Centre's mission, the Policy Forum's key objective is to guide, inform and shape future academic research amongst the Gillmore Centre researcher network through better alignment and calibration with Policymakers’ sphere of interest.

The Power of Social Networks in Capital Markets

As Aristotle famously noted, ''Humans are, by nature, social animals.'' Social networks' impacts on capital markets are likely to be even more important today because large-scale online social networks allow for easy communication among individuals that transcends the frictions associated with factors such as geographic distances.

On the one hand, social networks facilitate the flow of ideas and transmit valuable information. On the other hand, they can also spread rumours, amplify biases, influence individual beliefs, and trigger disagreements. These networks can thus exert substantial influence on investor and firm decisions in financial markets.

In this seminar, Prof Peng will present the latest research that uses large-scale, representative, real-world social network data to examine the effects of social networks on news diffusion, belief formation, trading, liquidity, and valuations of stocks.

Natural Language Processing Research to Drive FinTech: Now and Next

Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies have become increasingly popular to be used to gain insights into unstructured textual data in the finance domain. In this talk, I will present recent developments in NLP for (1) automatic construction of hierarchical topic taxonomy from a large-scale text corpus; (2) named entity recognition and financial event extraction from text; (3) sentiment analysis including sentiment classification, aspect-based sentiment analysis and contrastive opinion extraction; and (4) end-to-end NLP approaches for trading signals prediction. I will conclude my talk with an outlook on potential NLP technologies that will shape the future of FinTech.

The role of FinTech lenders in small business lending markets? with Assistant Professor Huan Tang

Using French administrative data, Huan will show that, relative to similar firms taking new bank loans, SMEs that take a FinTech loan borrow 20% more from banks in the next two years. The effect is more pronounced for low-collateral firms and when the FinTech loan finances the acquisition of tangible assets. This is consistent with firms using uncollateralized FinTech loans to acquire assets they can pledge to obtain bank loans. We also find evidence that firms use FinTech loans to meet urgent liquidity needs. In contrast, we find no evidence of a superior screening ability of FinTech lenders.
