As we start a new academic year and enter the last third of our 50th anniversary year we have many successes and achievements to celebrate, and Warwick’s unparalleled success over the last ten years has been reflected in all of the university league tables published since last term.

We all knew that this new academic year would be a special one for Warwick because of the start of the university’s 50th Year Anniversary Celebrations in January. We now know that we have even more cause to celebrate those 50 years of success with the welcome news that the Sunday Times and Times have just declared Warwick to be the University of the Year for 2014-15.

Dear all,

This last term has been marked by two very particular events, both of which have been significant journeys. They have each focused on our core missions of research and teaching. Staff and the research student community have, for some considerable time now, been on a long and challenging journey to pull together, and complete, our submission to the Research Excellence Framework. I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to that finishing line so that we were able to make our final submission last week.

Dear colleagues,

As the new academic year begins I would like to welcome back colleagues and students, welcome the great many new students joining us and, in particular, note that this year sees a great many new academic colleagues coming on board. Indeed over this last year we have recruited over 600 academic staff - a truly significant number that is bound to provide a significant enhancement to Warwick’s already strong teaching and research profile.

As we approach the end of another academic year, I want to take the opportunity to reflect on, and to thank you for playing your part in, all that we have achieved over the past year.

We have seen some major developments coming to fruition, developments that confirm Warwick’s position as a globally connected University. One of the most significant of these developments came in April when Warwick signed an agreement to become part of a consortium of universities led by New York University (NYU), which has established a 'Center for Urban Science and Progress' (CUSP) in downtown Brooklyn, in New York City.
