Australians united thanks to power of social relations – Dr Alex Smith

Dr Alexander Smith, a sociologist from the University of Warwick, was born and raised in Australia. Reflecting on recent events in the country, he said: “With the siege of the Sydney cafe over, Australians are now picking up the pieces and asking themselves difficult questions. Could this have been prevented? Could more have been done to save the three lives that were lost: the two hostages and the gunman himself?

Around the world, immigration has become a prime political concern. I hardly need to point to the number of countries where immigration has become a major electoral issue, whether in the United States, Europe, or Australia.

And, of course, immigration policy can cut across university policy, often in destructive ways...

Last week Monash and Warwick launched an attempt, unique so far as I know, to build a globally networked university through cooperation as well as organic growth. It is early days, of course, but the omens are good.
