Emergency arts funding: must benefit communities beyond big cities

The UK government has announced that it will support the arts and culture industry - which is suffering heavy losses through the COVID-19 crisis - with a £1.57bn emergency support package. Experts in theatre and culture from the University of Warwick react.

Arts funding imbalance: more must be done report finds

More must be done to the address the imbalance in arts funding between London and the rest of the country. That's the conclusion of a Culture, Media and Sport Committee report out today (15 December). Chris Bilton , Reader, School of Theatre Studies says the government has been urged to address this imbalance since the 1980s, with relatively little effect

Previewing on 12^th March at the RSC, Paapa Essiedu is the first black actor to play Hamlet for the RSC and only the seventh BAME performer to have played Hamlet in the UK since 1930.

Dr Jami Rogers is Honorary Fellow and Research Assistant for the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick. She responds to Sir Trevor Nunn's all white casting for the Rose Theatre in Kingston's forthcoming production of The Wars of the Roses,

"In the era when debates about the need for more diversity are legion, when Equity has adopted an Inclusive Casting Policy, and Act for Change recently hosted a major conference at the National Theatre on casting in theatre, Shakespeare is viewed as a bastion of diversity. The Rose Theatre, Kingston's forthcoming production of The Wars of the Roses has inadvertently re-opened that debate, as Trevor Nunn has assembled an all-white cast."
