Associate Professor Anant Sudarshan, on 12-year freeze in mileage rates

"The effect of freezing mileage rates lowers real wages after tax. This might have the unintended benefit of moving more trips to public transport, reducing congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions. But it's also going to reduce the number of people willing to do jobs that require a lot of driving, and many of those are frontline workers we all depend on. Ideally, this might be an opportunity to re-examine tax deductions for mileage more broadly - possibly even leaving those lower so that the costs of using a car are more visible, but making this up with higher standard deductions or wage increases."

"this is the real historic step and an important shift away from a world in which a few rich countries (try to) take decisions on their own." Dr Lucie Gadenne of Warwick Economics and CAGE comments on the news that 130 countries have agreed that there should be a minimum global corporation tax rate.

Tax Day - expert comment from Dr Arun Advani

"Tax nerds were promised a mega "tax day" today, with a number of tax consultations being published together. In principle this looked like a fantastic move. Instead we got a snooze-fest, even by tax standards." Dr Arun Advani, Assistant Professor of Economics and Impact Director, CAGE, reacts to "tax day."

As HMRC reports that the tax gap, the difference between the tax owed and what is actually paid, has fallen to the lowest recorded rate, Dr Arun Advani from the Department of Economics comments that there is still work to do on reducing that gap - particularly as the UK leaves the European Union.

Budget 2020 expert comment - closing the "tax gap"

" A single auditor working on self-assessment returns can bring in enough revenue to pay for their own salary, and that of four nurses too." The Chancellor has announced plans to employ 1300 additional auditors, expected to bring in an average of £770m a year over the next five years by improving compliance with the tax rules. Dr Arun Advani of Warwick Economics and CAGE explains the "tax gap" and why closing it is important.
