AI meets antiquity: Warwick ancient historian tests DeepMind’s transformative new model

A University of Warwick epigraphy expert has collaborated with Google DeepMind to evaluate ‘Aeneas’, an AI model that reimagines Roman inscriptions.

Co-authoring a paper published in the world's leading multidisciplinary science journal Nature today, Alison Cooley, Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Warwick, has played a key verification role in developing the first artificial intelligence (AI) model for contextualising ancient inscriptions.

Digital Arts & Humanities Lab Summer Programme

This Summer Term the DAHL will provide a full programme of exciting opportunities for staff, students, and alumni. No booking necessary.

Monday evenings, 5-6, the Virtual Reality club will meet to explore the latest in VR and AR tech and experiences for the Arts and Humanities (we have a range of headsets).
Wednesday afternoons, 1-2, we have two DAHL Shorts sessions (in the FAB and online), covering topics including digital humanities, artificial intelligence, and online museums.
Thursday lunchtimes, 12-1, DAHL Cafe, you can come along to the FAB Mezzanine for guidance from experts on using technologies in your research, study, and public engagement.
Digital Humanities Certification for staff and PGR students - participate in 6 DAHL Shorts sessions, do a project to adopt new tools and techniques into practice, and write/record a short reflective account of your experiences with digital humanities.
DAHL Showcase competition for students - enter your digital productions relating to the theme of "community and belonging" for a chance to win £50.

Arts Digital Humanities Certificate: PAMLA Arts Matter 22 Publication

The Digital Humanities for Postgraduate Researchers certificate, which ran for the first time in 2022, saw the development and submission of an exciting range of digital research and teaching projects. Raad Khair Allah, a PhD candidate in the Department of English and Comparative Literary, used Miro to explore the "Marginalization of Arab Women and Revolutionising Patriarchy”. In this project she demonstrated how Arab women challenge patriarchal notions of gender in Arab Society through writing, film and visual arts. Her digital project is now reaching an international audience, having been a candidate for the Paula Svonkin creative art Award, and subsequently being published on the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA) Arts matter 2022 website.

Do you want to join us as we launch our new course developments in Innovation by Design? Are you able to inspire and support our students to become confident, capable, and impactful designerly change agents; working with diverse communities locally and internationally, to tackle significant design challenges with empathy, understanding and creativity? Do you have a vision for the application of new technologies? Can you support students to master new technologies and help others to utilise those technologies effectively?

As part of a University of Warwick Strategic Investment Funded initiative, the School for Cross-Faculty Studies is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor (Teaching-focussed) to support the development, launch and delivery of its new Innovation by Design course. The new interdisciplinary course will sit in the School for Cross-Faculty Studies, which is home to a range of the University’s inter- and transdisciplinary degrees. Currently, these comprise the undergraduate Liberal Arts and Global Sustainable Development (GSD) programmes and our recently launched postgraduate taught and research courses in GSD. All of our offerings are designed to be interactive learning experiences; placing our students as collaborators and co-creators in the classroom. Students take modules from other departments across the University. This enables them to benefit from different learning styles and perspectives and enriches their understanding of and responses to a range of contemporary global issues, allowing them to challenge and question solutions.

Accordingly, we are looking for an ambitious, forward-thinking academic who believes in the value of design thinking, problem-based, experiential and community-centred learning to develop, refine and generate the knowledge and skills required by our students to become ‘designerly change agents’.

As an Assistant Professor (Teaching-focused), you will use your knowledge of design thinking, research and practices, alongside your expertise in digital technologies and techniques, to create and deliver modules and courses that engage, enthuse and inspire students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. You will possess knowledge of a range of teaching, learning and assessment strategies which you will employ in the development of high-quality teaching material.

You will join a successful and collegial team of academics in the School delivering cutting-edge research, innovative inter- and transdisciplinary teaching and outstanding student support.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed colleague, who is an excellent teacher and communicator, with a sound subject knowledge and who is passionate about making every aspect of our students’ experience of learning relevant and valuable.

Digital Arts Lab Showcase Student Competition 2022

Calling all students! The Digital Arts Lab (DAL) Student Showcase competition has just been launched for 2022. This is the third year of the DAL student competition, which enables our students to submit their best academic work or personal artefacts created through or about digital tools. This may be an academic assessment which utlises a digital tool (for example a video, podcast or website), a personal endeavour that uses or showcases a digital tool, or a short piece of writing that comments on the digital world (fiction and non-fiction are both welcome). Further guidelines here.

The winning submissions from last year can be found here. The judges were amazed at the winning entrants' creative use of technology and are looking forward to seeing this year's submissions. Winners from last year were part of a session at the University of Warwick TEAL (Teaching Enhanced Learning) Fest, where they explained how they had gone about creating their digital entry at a session which included educators from across the UK and further afield.

Faculty of Arts at Home - Film 32: Amazing Women: Mapping Suffrage

This month the Resonate Festival showcases Amazing Women, focusing on women’s lives, women’s stories, and the work of great women who have pushed all areas of all our lives forward.

Accordingly, in this video Professor Sarah Richardson from the Department of History tells us about the Mapping Women's Suffrage project, which aims to identify, plot and record the everyday lives and locations of as many Votes for Women campaigners as possible across England at the height of the suffrage movement in 1911. In particular, Sarah introduces us to some local Coventry and Warwickshire women who made their mark in the suffrage effort.

Faculty of Arts at Home 23 - Invention: Digitalisation and Cinema Projection in the UK

Tying in with the launch of the Resonate Festival, the University of Warwick’s year-long programme of events for City of Culture, and its focus on the idea of Invention throughout the month of May, Dr Richard Wallace (Film and Television Studies) brings us the film ‘Digitalisation and Cinema Projection in the UK’. Rick’s film explores his work on the AHRC funded ‘Projection Project’ and the history of film projection practices, reaching from the earliest days of cinema to the current digital revolution in film exhibition.
