10/06 10am-1pm: Using GIS Storymaps in Research

This workshop will look at the ways GIS can be used in research within the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Dr Godwin Yeboah (Senior Software Engineer, Research Computing) will give a presentation on the possibilities GIS offers for use in research, then Dr Christina Williamson (University of Groningen, IAS Visiting Fellow) will present on her use of GIS Storymaps in her research on Deep Mapping Sanctuaries

The workshop will conclude with refreshments and time for informal discussions.

This colloquium, supported by the Institute of Advanced Study and the Humanities Research Fund, brings together colleagues from Warwick (Depts of Classics/Ancient History and History of Art) with colleagues from the Universities of Groningen and Vienna to discuss the ways spaces, monuments and objects functioned within religious rituals from Antiquity to the Renaissance.

16/06 11am-1pm: CHMST & WIE Public Engagement Workshop

This workshop will introduce key concepts from public engagement theory that can support good practice. From understanding your purpose to tailoring for your audience, we will explore the important questions to consider when designing and developing public engagement activity and the value of this to both individuals and the institution. We will reflect on how this could be applied to your own research, and discuss the wider support available from the Warwick Institute of Engagement - wherever you are on your engagement journey.

The workshop will be led by Laura Harford, the strategic lead for Resonate, WIE’s public events programme. She has extensive experience in outreach and public engagement, and works closely with students, staff and community partners to create accessible and engaging projects.

The workshop will run from 11-1 on 16th June, and a buffet lunch will be provided after the session.

18/06 9:15am-5:30pm: CHMST&MRC Conference: 'Blood is the Price of Coal: Coal Communities, Health & Welfare in Britain & Beyond from the 19th Century to the Present'

This free one-day conference aims to bring together researchers from higher education, libraries, archives, museums and community and campaign groups to explore the history of health and welfare in Britain’s coal mining industry.

Held jointly by the University of Warwick's Centre for the History of Medicine, Science and Technology, and Modern Records Centre, the event will run alongside an exhibition which will explore some of the themes covered by the speakers through the National Union of Mineworkers' archives.
