FTV's Hande Çayır led filmmaking workshops at SOAS, University of London's Brunei Gallery

Hande Çayır designed and facilitated audio-visual storytelling workshops as part of the UKRI-funded ‘Archive of Solidarity: Precarity, Creativity and Shared Future-Making Across Closed Borders’ project, held from 22 April to 9 May 2025 at SOAS University of London’s Brunei Gallery.

Misha Zakharov is hosting multiple guest events this spring in collaboration with Queer East, Flatpack, and King’s College London

This spring, third-year Warwick's Film & TV PhD candidate Misha Zakharov is staging multiple one-off events across London and Birmingham in collaboration with various institutions. These events, which combine screenings of rarely-seen films with discussions and curated book stands/printed materials, tackle subjects such as queer identities in Central Asia, epistemic violence and censorship in the Global South, and women’s prisons in the United States and Canada.

Thursday 24th April (18:30–21:00): Bush House, King’s College London – the UK premiere of Shubigi Rao’s film Talking Leaves (Singapore’s participation in the Venice Biennale, 2022), followed by a discussion with Ihar Ivanou, editor at the Belarusian diasporic publishing house Skaryna Press, alongside a curated book stand. This event also serves as an introduction to the symposium Scholarly Knowledge in the Context of Epistemic Injustice and Authoritarian Censorship:

Monday 28th April (19:00–21:30): Queer East, UCL East, London – lecture-performance on Kazakh countertenor Erik Kurmangaliev, followed by a screening of Uzbek filmmaker Rustam Khamdamov’s Vocal Parallels, accompanied by a specially designed libretto:

Tom Hemingway and James MacDowell's video essay selected in Sight & Sound best-of list

A video essay by the department’s Tom Hemingway and James MacDowell was chosen by two contributors to Sight & Sound's best-of 2024 poll. Their video is about Bo Burnham's Netflix comedy special INSIDE, authenticity and YouTube aesthetics. The list also includes James' picks for best video essays of the year. FTV’s Hande Çayır publishes reflection piece on inclusive pedagogy in the latest issue of The Journal of PGR Pedagogic Practice

Hande Çayır’s reflection piece has been published in the latest issue of The Journal of PGR Pedagogic Practice. The article shares strategies found to be effective by a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for creating inclusive seminars, emphasising the importance of understanding diverse student needs, valuing feedback, and fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Set in Brighton, the 20-minute film presents the visual diary of a woman from Turkey, offering an intimate glimpse into her journey. It has been showcased at platforms, including the European International Film Festival, Los Angeles International Film Festival, Art Beats Festival, and Shortfilmwire+ Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Network.

Stephen Gundle to give the 2024 Leconfield Lecture at the Italian Cultural Institute in London on 6 November

His topic is 'Two Faces of the Italian Film Industry: Dino De Laurentiis and Suso Cecchi D'Amico'.

The producer De Laurentiis was one of the architects of the rise of Italian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s, while Cecchi D'Amico, who for many years was the only working female screenwriter, authored over a hundred screenplays, including most of Visconti's films.

FTV Organisers of Samizdat Film Festival Celebrate its Return

Samizdat Film Festival (https://samizdatfest.co.uk/) in Scotland, co-founded and ran by Ilia Ryzhenko, misha (irek) yakovlev and PhD students at other universities will run for its third year from 1st until 5th October in Glasgow and, for the first time ever, in Edinburgh on 19th October.

Named after the practice of clandestine dissemination of censored and forbidden texts in Communist states, Samizdat Film Festival is an audience-focused film festival based in Glasgow. The festival takes place annually at CCA Glasgow, online, on the streaming platform Klassiki, and for the first time this October in Edinburgh. With a diverse programme of meticulously curated retrospectives and new films, as well as special events (online panel discussions, silent films with a score performed live, showcases of short films). Samizdat is Scotland’s first festival of cinema from Eastern/Central Europe, Central, North and North-Easy Asia, and the Caucasus.

Film and TV's Tiago de Luca kicks off ‘Latin American Cinema: Between Theory and Practice' at the BFI Southbank

‘Latin American Cinema: Between Theory and Practice’ comprises three sessions taking place at the BFI Southbank in June and July.

This is the third series of workshops devoted to re-envisioning film theory in a global context. For session 1, on 19 June, ‘Depth of Field, Class Conflict and the Latin American Cinema of Domestic Service’, Tiago de Luca (University of Warwick) will focus on depth-of-field theories in ‘cinema of domestic work’. This session will consider whether André Bazin’s foundational writings on depth of field can be applied to recent Latin American films about the relationship between employers and live-in domestic workers.
