Prof. Korosteleva invited to be a Board Member of the Scientific Council for COP29 Presidency

Prof. Elena Korosteleva has been invited to be a Board Member of the Scientific Council in preparation for the COP29 Presidency by Azerbaijan. As part of the Board's remit, the scientists will work on the agenda, ideas and recommendations for COP29. The 1st meeting took place on Friday, 26 July 2024, and involved 30 members from the international Scientific Community. Members were addressed by H.E. Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate, Minister of Energy and Dr Elnur Soltanov, CEO of COP29, & Deputy Minister of Energy in Azerbaijan. The meeting was hosted by ADA University, its Rector Ambassador Hafiz Pashaeyev, Rector, and Dr Fariz Ismailzade, Vice Rector.

The meeting discussed key challenges and issues for COP29, to shape the agenda as well as the activities for side events at COP29. The next meeting is scheduled for September 2024.

Former IGSD Training School Participants Pilot Water Governance and Biodiversity Project in Thailand

A team of early career researchers recently completed a successful hybrid participatory workshop focused on water governance and biodiversity in Bangkok, Thailand. The workshop was organised by former participants of the Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD) Sustainability Training School, with support from the University of Warwick and Thammasat University.

The project, a testament to the impact of the IGSD training, brought together experts from a range of institutions including Mahidol University, Thailand Policy Lab, UNDP Thailand, Asian Institute of Technology, University of Manchester, Monash University, University of Glasgow, Thailand Royal Irrigation Department, GIZ, and Lagos University.

Despite the challenges of coordinating across time zones and amidst ongoing thesis writing, the organisers successfully delivered a valuable learning and collaboration experience.

This pilot project is just one example of the many initiatives led by the IGSD Sustainability Training School participants around the world, demonstrating the lasting impact of the program on fostering sustainable development research and action.

IGSD Network away day

IGSD had a network away day, with a facilitator Dr Paula Black, to review its strategy and identify roadmaps for growing further, including its Thematic and Honorary Fellows' networks. The Away Day took place at the Junction, and was informative as to ways forward, including how to better integrate and contribute to the Sustainability Spotlight Initiative, going forward.

Sustainability Spotlight Network+ Initiative

During the Warwick Research Culture Day on 29 April 2024, the new interdisciplinary Spotlight Initiatives were launched to replace GRPs and to drive the university forward into a new REF landscape. One of them - Sustainability Spotlight - was won by a collective of researchers, led by IGSD.

Sustainability Spotlight is set to be a network-of-networks, focusing on research on sustainability. In addition to IGSD, it includes 4 other networks – the Environmental Humanities Network (led by Prof. Graeme Macdonald, Faculty of Arts), the Sustainable Society Network (led by Prof. Giuliana Battisti, WBS), WESIC (led by Prof. Gary Bending, Life Sciences) and WMG Materials & Innovation Network (led by Associate Prof. Stuart Coles) – and brings together over 2000 researchers! We aim for the network to be all-inclusive, and its objectives are:

Creation of a single information and communication space for all, with a focus on sustainability research
Visualisation of our networks
Nurture the ECR community and STS
Generating joint funding opportunities
Holding a sustainability forum with external stakeholders

We are planning to have an informal launch in early July, and everyone whose research focuses on sustainability is warmly welcome! We will announce the programme soon. Please follow us on https://warwick.ac.uk/research/spotlights/sustainability/.

IGSD regional engagement - Presentation in Stoke Primary School

On Monday June 19 Dr Vangelis Pitidis visited community members at Stoke Primary school in Ball Hill, Coventry, as part of an internal project focusing on tackling air pollution in the area through participatory research methods. Dr Pitidis discussed the concept and potential practical use of Citizen Science tools and methods to support the engagement and participation of local communities in envirnmental issues, preparing the ground fo the Citizens' Jury sessions that will be taking place on the area later this year. This is an interview provided by Prof. Jon Coaffee and IGSD's Dr. Vangelis Pitidis from the University of Warwick, leaders of the EU H2020-funded proJECT RiskPACC Work Package 2 '“Engaging Citizens to expand understandings of risks, vulnerabilities and data collection opportunities”. In this interview WP2 leaders present the outcomes of the work undertaken in the contex of their Work Package, but also express some general ideas regarind the overall contribution of Warwick University in the Project.
