Where: Mathematics Institute, Zeeman Building.

This is a suite of 10 weekly, face to face classes held in a lecture theatre at the university and delivered by experienced teachers, who are invested in equipping students as mathematical problem solvers.

This course has been redesigned to focus more around the TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission), which has been growing in popularity and is now used by many universities for admission to maths, economics, computer science and statistics degrees.

The classes have an explorative, workshop feel where students are equipped with tools, techniques and tips, and then supported to work through a number of related problems.

This lecture is for schoolteachers and has two objectives.

The first one is to provide ideas for educators to integrate cybersecurity concepts in their subjects.

The second one is to provide resources for pupils to learn about cybersecurity and practice their skills in a safe environment.

Note that it can be given to KS5 pupils. Please email khalil.challita@warwick.ac.uk for further details. This activity is about an hour in length.

Our staff offer experimental laboratory work experiences placements every summer (in July and August) for secondary school students aged 16 and over. A range of short research projects in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry and microbiology are available in the biomedical research laboratories based at Warwick Medical School.

The Department of Physics offers a small number of work experience placements in the Easter vacation each year for students in Years 10-12.

The work experience placement will provide you with a broad insight into physics and what it would be like to work in a busy university physics department. You will spend time with our highly skilled research and technical staff learning about real-life physics problems and working on exciting research projects.

In this event we explore probabilistic models in epidemiology. We will use the Binomial distribution to build complex models that explain how rumours (or infectious diseases) spread. We also discuss how to fit such models to data. The session will illustrate the process of mathematical and statistical modelling and thus gives an insight into the work of a mathematical epidemiologist.

We will discuss studying mathematics at university, and give a flavour to what research in statistics looks like. We will see some fun illustrations of probability and statistics such as the Monty Hall problem, how this can be solved by simulation, and some puzzles related to generating arbitrary probabilities using a coin.

For events on campus we will supply lunch and refreshments. This can also be combined with a campus tour and an academic lecture on CS at University.

Flocking is a group animal behaviour that is characteristic of many living creatures. In this workshop we will create a particle system that follows 3 simple rules to behave like a flock. We will be using object orientated programming and p5js (a JavaScript library for creative coding, with a focus on making coding accessible and inclusive for artists, designers, educators, beginners, and anyone else!).

Note this workshop builds on the Particle Systems Workshop and the two can be run together.

Simulations are a fantastic way to gain intuitive understanding of complex systems. They are used to describe, understand, and predict a system’s behaviour. In this workshop we will look at how Cellular Automata can be used in simulation and model the spread of a disease. We will be using Jupyter notebooks (an open-source web application that you can use to create and share documents that contain live code (in Python), equations, visualizations, and text).

25/09-01/07: Analytical Monopoly

Putting analytical chemistry into context, students work as competing businesses tasked with identifying unknown chemicals.

This is a session where 2-4 groups of ~5 students (typically KS5) play a game of Monopoly - with analytical techniques such as IR, NMR or mass spec, are the currency! As such, this activity supports the A-level spectroscopy syllabus and introduces new analytical techniques and chemical structures. Students will aim to build their business empire as they establish their business strategy, decide which analytical techniques to purchase, and hopefully make a profit as a result!

25/09-01/07: Why Chemistry?

This lecture showcases the full breath of the Chemistry subject - which is usually very very different from what high-school student actually imagines!

From polymer science to computational chemistry, we want to tell students that Chemistry is not just "mixing colourful powders in glass jars" - there is so much more to it! We also discuss jobs opportunities that are available to a Chemistry graduate - again, these are not what students usually expect!

This is a perfect opportunity to inform KS5 students who are about to make the very difficult and important decision of whether and what to study at University. We can cater for very large groups as long as an adequate space is provided.
