It combines innovative databases, web scraping and Google Maps with administrative records—such as the Bogotá Urban Development Institute (IDU) databases—to assess how the announcement of the metro construction impacts on the rental or sales market prices for the houses surrounding the infrastructure projects.

IER Publishes its 100th Bulletin

IER has pioneered labour market assessment and forecasting work in the UK, and remains at the forefront of employment forecasting with an international reputation for the quality of its work.

The 100th IER Bulletin summarises the findings of Working Futures 2010-2020, the fourth in a series of labour market assessments that provide detailed projections for the UK labour market. It focuses on a ten year horizon, giving a picture of the labour market for 2020; including employment prospects for industries, occupations, qualification levels, gender and employment status for the UK and for nations and English regions. The core purpose of Working Futures is to inform policy development and strategy around skills, careers and employment.

The wordle below illustrates the key words used in the Bulletin.

Peter Elias Attends JSM

Peter Elias attended the American Statistical Association 2011 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Miami, Florida which took place from 30 July to 4 August. The JSM is the world’s largest gathering of statisticians, where discussions centred around sharing research and information on topics including hurricanes and global warming, maintaining data privacy, and challenges for economic policy. Peter was panellist and presenter at a session on the topic of “The New World of Data on Human Beings: Challenges and Solutions to Promoting Research While Ensuring Confidentiality” alongside colleagues from Carnegie Mellon University, National Science Foundation, The University of Chicago, University of California at Berkeley. This session attracted over 50 people, many from the major state and federal statistical agencies in the US, to listen to and discuss views on the ways in which new forms of data (administrative records, transactions data, internet activity and imaging) are likely to be harnessed in the near future to supplement more traditional forms of statistical information obtained from censuses and surveys.
