Dr Andrew Cooper is a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker for 2023

Dr Andrew Cooper has been named a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker for 2023. Each year a select group of ten early career researchers from across the UK are chosen by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and BBC Radio 3 to become a New Generation Thinker. This prestigious NGT status will provide Dr Cooper with a unique opportunity to make radio broadcasts for the BBC, and disseminate his research on German philosopher Amalia Holst to a wider audience. Dr Cooper will also benefit from training and development provided by the AHRC. Dr Karen Simecek Wins An Excellence in Impact with a Third Sector Organisation Award

Dr Karen Simecek has won the Award for Excellence in Impact with a Third Sector Organisation at the Social Science Impact Celebration event that took placed on 27 March 2023. This was in recognition of her ongoing work with national charity Poet in the City.

Dr Simecek's research has achieved transformational impact on national charity, Poet in the City’s work with communities by embedding an ethical framework (in the form of a poetic manifesto) into the development and launch of their Newcastle Poetry Exchange Hub. This has provided Poet in the City with a model that will shape the development of future Poetry Exchange Hubs up and down the country. Katie Matthews (interim CEO, Poet in the City) commented: “The poetic manifesto has become an important, practical tool in developing and delivering PinC projects, highlighting key principles and considerations when writing poetry with and for different communities. Used alongside our Theory of Change, the manifesto helps to ensure we genuinely centre the voices of the communities we work with and capture their stories authentically and sensitively.”

As part of Oxford UP's focus in March on 'Women in the History of Philosophy', Eileen John's paper on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, 'Dickinson and Pivoting Thought', in The Poetry of Emily Dickinson (ed. Elisabeth Camp), has been made available for open access this month. How does Dickinson's poetry address our limitations and ambitions as knowers? E.g., what do you make of ... Launch of the IAA Project Report on 'Co-Creational Media', Co-Authored by Professor Fabienne Peter

Professor Fabienne Peter, together with co-author Jonathan Heawood, have officially launched the report of their project, ‘Co-Creational Media: Committing to Truth and Public Participation’. The report assesses the ethical and practical implications of a new form of participatory journalism, produced not only for, but with communities. The Department of Philosophy Receives an Athena Swan Bronze Award

The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce that it has been successful in its renewal of an Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of its continuing commitment to support and transform gender equality in higher education and research. The Bronze award has been conferred for five years, in line with recommendations from the Athena Swan Steering Group, and will be valid until 30 September 2027.

The Athena Swan Gender Equality Charter, founded in 2005, is an internationally recognised gender equality initiative that celebrates good practices in higher education and research institutions towards the advancement of gender equality: Representation, Progression and Success for all.

This achievement reflects the Department’s continuing excellence in teaching and research, and its ongoing commitment to enhancing the student experience in the study of philosophy at Warwick.

Professor Quassim Cassam FBA

Professor Quassim Cassam has been elected Fellow of The British Academy in recognition of his outstanding scholarship in the field of Philosophy. Each year The British Academy awards Fellowships to a select number of individuals who have received distinction in any branch of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Professor Cassam is one of only 52 elections from UK Universities to be announced in 2022.

The British Academy is one of the UK’s most prestigious institutions, seeking to promote the Humanities and Social Sciences by investing in research, engaging the public, and influencing policy. It was established by Royal Charter in 1902 and celebrates its 120^th anniversary this year.

Black Voices Network Career Event Profiles Philosophy Department Alumni

A Black Voices Network event took place on 17 June 2022, which was the first open invitation, in person, alumni careers event, held with the assistance and support of the Department of Philosophy.

A distinguished panel of former alumni, including Vera Okojie (FinTech Analyst at Visa / Founder of Career Confident), Hodo Hassan (Policy Advisor in the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs), Shore Delano (Digital Project Manager at Magnum Photos/ founder of diverse theatre platform 'The Rendition'), and Gabrielle Oke (actor and visual artist) spoke engagingly to an enthusiastic audience about their career paths and achievements, and the challenges they have encountered on the way to their success. The session was chaired by Jude Folorunso (President of Warwick Philosophy Black Voices Network) and was supported by the Warwick Philosophy Black Voices Network with the generous support of Warwick Enterprise and the Innovation 2022 campaign. It is hoped that this event will become a regular feature in the academic calendar.

The Philosophy Department is celebrating success in the Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence 2022.

Congratulations to Adina Covaci, who is a Finalist in this year’s Teaching Excellence Awards. Adina says: “In my teaching, I pursue 3 main goals: 1) to encourage students to see the importance of philosophy beyond the classroom; 2) to get students to do philosophy and be partners in the learning process, rather than just absorb information; 3) to create an inclusive environment where student well-being is central and all voices are heard. To meet these aims, I employ a variety of active teaching methods, I focus on inclusivity, and I promote holistic learning. WATE PGR 2022

Many congratulations to William Gildea who is a Winner in this year’s PG WATE category. In addition, both Giulia Lorenzi and Diogo Carneiro are both awarded Commendations for their outstanding contributions to teaching this year. This is an impressive result for the Philosophy Department PGRs, and a wonderful achievement for Will, Giulia and Diogo, who have all excelled in their commitment to both teaching and the Philosophy community in 2022.
