 is required in order to attend. About the talk Online platforms have led
  to significant innovation resulting in new services and significant con
 sumer benefits. The extent of network effects and economies of scale and
  scope however\, especially relating to big data\, has led some online p
 latforms to become the only (or the main) operator in their area\, with 
 associated significant market power\, and the potential for harmful outc
 omes for different categories of consumers. Does competition (whether in
  or for the market) work in online markets or are market failures so per
 vasive as to call for ex-ante intervention? And if regulation is necessa
 ry\, what should it look like to avoid the risk of regulatory failures i
 n such innovative and dynamic markets? About the speaker - Luisa Affuso 
 Luisa is Chief Economist at Ofcom\, the UK communications regulator. She
  is a member of Ofcom’s executive board\, and leads the Economics Group.
  She joined from PwC where she headed the Competition Economics practice
 . Luisa has over twenty years’ experience in the application of competit
 ion\, regulatory\, and industrial economics. She has advised on competit
 ion policy matters and has given expert evidence on a number of high-pro
 file cases before several antitrust authorities and Courts in a number o
 f jurisdictions including the European Commission\, Italy\, UK\, South A
 frica\, India\, and Singapore. Luisa's key expertise is in directing eco
 nomic analysis and related policy developments to address complex proble
 ms in dynamic markets. She has advised on a large number of cases includ
 ing mergers\, abuse of dominance and restrictive horizontal and vertical
  agreements\, as well as damages litigation from antitrust infringements
 \, market studies and market investigations\, and State aid. Luisa start
 ed her career as an academic\, initially at the University of Cambridge 
 where she was Director of Studies and Fellow in Economics at Robinson Co
 llege\, and a Research Associate of the Department of Applied Economics\
 , and subsequently at the London Business School. She is currently a Sen
 ior Member of Robinson College. Luisa was educated at the University of 
 Warwick\, where she obtained an MSc and PhD in Economics. She has been l
 isted in the Who’s Who legal of Competition Experts\, as one of the worl
 d’s leading competition economists for several years\, and has been sele
 cted by the Who’s Who 2018 as one of the global thought leaders in compe
