DESCRIPTION:The Warwick Centre for Global Health invites you to a talk by
Professor Carmen Logie (MSW\, PhD University of Toronto). How is HIV pr
evention and care connected with extreme weather events and water\, sani
tation\, and food insecurity? The causal pathways accounting for these a
ssociations are understudied. This is particularly true in certain conte
xts (for instance\, humanitarian settings) and among socially marginalis
ed populations (e.g. adolesent girls\, sex workers). Prof. Logie will pr
esent findings from three mixed-methods community-based studies in two c
limate and HIV affected contexts\, including a) Bidi Bidi Refugee Settle
ment\, Uganda\, with refugee youth\, b) key populations (sex workers and
men who have sex with men) living with HIV in Kampala\, Uganda\, and c)
in Kenya\, with adolescents in urban informal setllements in Nairobi an
d in fishing communities outside of Kisumu. The talk will offer suggesti
ons for climate and EWE-informed HIV cascade research and practice with
 climate-affected populations in East Africa.

DESCRIPTION:The Gender and the Law Cluster at Warwick Law School would li
ke to invite you to our upcoming work-in-progress presentations. We have
four wonderful sessions scheduled\, each designed to provide constructi
ve feedback on ongoing research. If you would like to join any of the pr
esentations\, please register your interest here\, and we will share fur
ther details upon registration. Mahek Bhatia on 'Exploring Marital Sexua
l Violence Litigation in India' Abstract: My MSc thesis investigated the
operation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005\,
focusing on litigation experiences and the potential for strategic legal
engagement. Drawing on legal reports and ten semi-structured interviews
with lawyers\, it uncovered that engagement with civil law is not legal
istic\, uniform\, straightforward\, or wholly separate from criminal jus
tice institutions. Instead\, litigation is more complex and game-like\,
with players\, rules\, advisors\, and contested outcomes\, in which civi
l law and criminal law are enmeshed in complex ways. Within this framewo
rk\, lawyers emerge as crucial intermediaries who balance the legal syst
em’s constraints with the needs of survivors. As I begin my PhD\, I will
be developing this project for doctoral research. In the presentation\,
I will outline how I plan to do so and explain the intended methodologi
cal design of the project. Receiving feedback and constructive criticism
on this development will be crucial and beneficial for the project.
