DESCRIPTION:The poster showcasing event celebrates BSc Health and Medical
Sciences finalists' dissertation project efforts by showcasing their pr
oject posters. We invite all staff at WMS to peruse the posters\, chat t
o students and their project supervisors about their research projects.
This a great chance to see the wide range of projects undergraduate stud
ents have undertaken\; from lab-based projects\, social science research
to systematic reviews and service evaluations. This will be held in GLT
3 (Medical School Building) at 1:30-2:3pm on Tuesday 2nd June. Refreshme
 nts will be provided.

SUMMARY:BMS Seminar: Collective state transitions in epithelial dynamics
through mechanochemical feedback\, Dr Tsuyoshi Hirashima\, Mechanobiolog
y Institute/Department of Physiology\, National University of Singapore
TZID:Europe/London
UID:20260605-8ac672c49d3cb3aa019d4d41606f64d7@warwick.ac.uk

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Collective cell motion is a fundamental phenomenon
at the interface of cell biology\, developmental biology\, and non-equil
ibrium physics. However\, how mechanical and chemical cues are integrate
d at the cellular level to generate coordinated multicellular behaviours
remains incompletely understood. In this talk\, I will present a mechan
o-signalling feedback mechanism that couples ERK activity with mechanica
l force generation and cell movement\, giving rise to robust spatiotempo
ral coordination observed both in vitro and in vivo. I will first review
prior work establishing ERK-mediated feedback as a prototypical example
of an active epithelial system\, in which biochemical signalling and me
chanics are dynamically intertwined. Building on this framework\, I will
then introduce our recent findings that reveal two distinct but coupled
types of transitions governing collective dynamics: a rigidity transiti
on\, which modulates the mechanical state of the tissue\, and a percolat
ion transition\, which controls the connectivity required for long-range
signal propagation. I will discuss how the interplay between these tran
sitions defines the dynamical regimes of epithelial tissues and enables
the emergence of coordinated patterns of activity. Biography: Tsuyoshi H
irashima was trained as a mathematical biologist and received his Ph.D.
from Kyushu University in 2011. During his Ph.D. training\, he studied m
athematical modeling on tissue morphogenesis in development under the me
ntorship of Prof. Yoh Iwasa. He moved to Kyoto University as a JSPS post
doc research fellow and learned experimental skills in cell and developm
ental biology at Prof. Ryoichiro Kageyama’s lab. He then joined the facu
lty of Kyoto University as an Assistant Professor in 2014\, a senior lec
turer in 2017\, and an Associate Professor at the Hakubi Center for Adva
nced Research in 2021. He has since joined MBI in 2022 to further pursue
his scientific and personal curiosity. He has been on the editorial boa
rd of Journal of Theoretical Biology since 2022.

SUMMARY:BMS Seminar: Understanding the in vivo dynamics of distinct muscl
e stem cells systems during growth and regeneration and their different
niches across the vertebrate phylogeny\, Professor Peter Currie\, Monash
  University

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: While the function of adult tissue-resident stem ce
lls during regeneration and disease have received much attention\, the m
echanistic basis of stem cell driven organ growth remains relatively poo
rly defined. Consequently\, our understanding of processes that drive or
gan development remains piecemeal. Understanding stem cell dynamics with
in the organ systems that deploy them to generate growth is critical for
the success of ongoing efforts to generate complex functioning organs f
rom organoid rudiments in vitro. Thus\, we have sought to understand the
stem cell processes that regulate and drive myotomal growth from the te
mplate of the embryonic myotome using zebrafish as our main model system
. Here we compare and contrast modes of myotomal growth and muscle regen
eration and their molecular regulation in distinct niches across the phy
logeny\, in attempt to generate a fuller understanding of the way muscle
stem cells act within different vertebrate clades. Biography: Professor
Peter Currie is a world-renowned developmental evolutionary and stem ce
ll biologist who studies the genetic basis of skeletal muscle stem cell
action during development\, evolution\, regeneration and disease. His ke
y discoveries utilise several models\, chiefly the zebrafish\, to define
the genetic and evolutionary basis for muscle formation and growth thro
ughout vertebrate phylogeny. Prof Currie has played a key role globally
in developing zebrafish as a disease model for human muscle disease and
regeneration biology. He has also been instrumental in establishing shar
k embryology as a modern evolutionary paradigm to understand the evoluti
onary origins of the vertebrate body plan. In 2016\, Professor Peter Cur
rie was appointed Director of Research of the Australian Regenerative Me
dicine Institute at Monash University in Melbourne\, Australia. He is a
recipient of a European Molecular Biology Organization Young Investigato
rs Award and a Wellcome Trust International Research Fellowship and curr
ently is a Principal Research Fellow with the National Health and Medica
l Research Council in Australia and an elected Fellow of the Australian
 Academy of Science.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I would like to discuss our work exp
loring the effects of a mutation at the Wnt4 locus. This common human SN
P has been repeatedly associated with antagonistic pleiotropic effects o
n pregnancy length and endometriosis\, among other reproductive phenotyp
es. We showed previously that the minor allele is known to generate a no
vel perfect binding site for estrogen receptor alpha. Using transgenic m
ouse lines with this mutation\, we showed that it causes upregulation of
Wnt4 expression in mouse endometrial stromal cells following the preovu
latory estrogen peak. Notably\, the pregnancy length in these mice is no
t affected. However\, together with upregulation of Wnt4 in mutants\, we
see a series of phenotypes that suggest an effect on implantation\, and
appear at odds with previous findings that endometriosis is associated
with diminished progesterone response. I will discuss the published work
\, as well as some of the more recent findings. Biography: Mihaela Pavli
cev is Professor for Theoretical Evolutionary Biology at the University
of Vienna. Her studies led her from a PhD in Ecology at the University o
f Vienna\, over postdoctoral positions in Evolutionary Quantitative Gene
tics in St. Louis (USA) and Oslo (Norway)\, to a research professorship
at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Research Center in 2013. During the la
tter\, her work increasingly focused on the genetic basis of mammalian r
eproductive traits\, among which pregnancy length featured strongly. In
2019\, Pavlicev returned to Vienna to take on her current position. In h
er research\, she addresses the genetic bases and the evolution of repro
 ductive traits.
