 heoretical maximum for bacterial surface adhesion in fluid flow Abstract
 : The mitigation of bacterial adhesion to surfaces and subsequent biofil
 m formation is a key challenge in healthcare and manufacturing processes
 . To accurately predict biofilm formation you must determine how changes
  to bacteria behaviours and dynamics alter their ability to adhere to su
 rfaces. In this talk\, I will present a framework for incorporating micr
 oscale behaviour into continuum models using techniques from statistical
  mechanics at the microscale combined with boundary-layer theory at the 
 macroscale. We will examine the flow of a dilute suspension of motile ba
 cteria over a flat absorbing surface\, developing an effective model for
  the bacteria density near the boundary inspired by the classical Lévêqu
 e boundary layer problem. We use our effective model to derive analytica
 l solutions for the bacterial adhesion rate as a function of fluid shear
  rate and individual motility parameters of the bacteria\, validating ag
 ainst stochastic numerical simulations of individual bacteria. We find t
 hat bacterial adhesion is greatest at intermediate flow rates\, since at
  higher flow rates shear-induced upstream swimming limits adhesion. Bio:
  Dr. Edwina Yeo is an applied mathematician whose research lies at the i
 ntersection of continuum mechanics and mathematical biology. She is curr
 ently an EPSRC National Fluid Dynamics (NFFDy) Fellow in the Department 
 of Mathematics at University College London (UCL)\, where she develops c
 ontinuum models to study aggregating fluid systems. Before joining UCL\,
  Dr. Yeo was an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Postdoctoral Researcher at the Math
 ematical Institute\, University of Oxford. She earned her DPhil in Mathe
 matics (2023) and an MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Comput
 ing (2018)\, both from the University of Oxford. Her work combines rigor
 ous mathematical analysis with practical applications\, contributing to 
 a deeper understanding of complex fluid dynamics and its role in biologi
 cal and physical systems.
