 ed in a career in academic or policy research. CAGE is a research centre
  based in the department of economics at the University of Warwick. We d
 eliver policy driven economics research informed by culture\, history an
 d behaviour. The three-day residential training course provides a practi
 cal grounding in coding\, data analysis management and research design -
  all the skills needed to get started as a researcher. Deadline for appl

 ing economics or quantitative social science in the UK or EU are eligibl

 e a mix of lectures and interactive sessions delivered by academic and p
 olicy experts and cover the following: Coding for economists: learn how 
 to organise a professional coding workflow. Data management and analysis
 : understand ways to put together\, present and analyse complex repeated
  cross-section and panel datasets. Digitisation of historical data: hear
  how to convert hard copy tabular and text data into electronic form. Us
 ing GIS (Geographic Information System) techniques to extract spatial da
 ta from maps. Working on the cloud: a guide to setting up and running bi
 g data analysis on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Using Large Language Model
 s: learn how to build new types of data for economics research. The time
 table of the summer school will be organised around lectures in the firs
 t half of the day with research presentations / case studies in the seco
 nd half. There will also be the chance for more hands-on and participato
 ry work in the afternoon sessions. Biographies of the speakers Mirko Dra
 ca is a professor of economics at the University of Warwick\, a research
  associate at the Centre for Economic Performance\, and CAGE Research Ce
 ntre Director. His main research area is applied microeconomics\, with a
 pplications to labour markets\, political economy\, criminal behaviour a
 nd innovation and technology. Peter John Lambert is an economist and co-
 director of the Applied Economics using AI (AEAI) Lab. His research focu
 ses on leveraging novel data and AI/LLMs to study organizations\, indust
 ries\, and economic growth. He studied his PhD in Economics at the Londo
 n School of Economics (LSE). Eric Melander is an assistant professor of 
 economics at the University of Birmingham and an external CAGE research 
 associate. His research interests span economic history and political ec
 onomy. In his work\, he draws on techniques from applied econometrics\, 
 geographic information systems and digital humanities. Eligibility The s
 ummer school is open to year 1 and 2 UK and EU undergraduates studying e
 conomics or quantitative social science. Please note you will not be eli
 gible for a place if you have previously attended any CAGE data training

DESCRIPTION:Title: Inheritance Customs and the European Marriage Pattern 
 Abstract: Centuries before the demographic transition\, the European Mar
 riage Pattern (EMP) limited fertility in Western Europe through high cel
 ibacy\, late marriage\, and nuclear households. Whether the EMP reflecte
 d female empowerment or instead financial hardship remains debated. This
  paper shows that local inheritance institutions determined where econom
 ic opportunity strengthened the EMP and where it did not. We construct a
  new atlas of 2\,441 rural and urban inheritance customs in France and B
 elgium and combine it with genealogical data on 75\,000 women born betwe
 en 1500 and 1750. We show that the EMP emerged alongside economic opport
 unities where inheritance included women and younger siblings\, but that
  the EMP reflected economic distress where inheritance was inegalitarian
 \; that effects differed between urban and rural areas\; and that they p
 ersisted over centuries. We develop and estimate a structural model in w
 hich inheritance rules affect marriage decisions through female empowerm
 ent and financial constraints. The estimates imply that 70 percent of ce
 libacy reflected choice rather than constraint\, suggesting that the EMP
  was primarily a positive force for Europe's development.

 ence Cases: The Role of Specialized Courts and Judges (with Carolina Art
 eaga\, Paola Salardi\, and Dario Toman) Abstract: How does the design of
  a justice system affect protection in cases of intimate partner violenc
 e? We study the large-scale implementation of a system of specialized do
 mestic violence courts (SDVCs)\, an innovation in access to justice prog
 rams for potential victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) and offend
 ers. Using individual-level administrative data from the universe of civ
 il domestic violence cases in Puerto Rico during the period 2014-2020\, 
 we leverage the staggered opening of SDVCs across judicial regions to ex
 amine the consequences for victims’ judicial protection and offender rec
 idivism. Access to SDVCs leads to a considerable 8 percentage points inc
 rease in the probability that judges issue a protection order and a 1.7 
 percentage point (15 percent) decrease in victim and offender reappearan
 ce rates within one year of the start of the case. Effects are more pron
 ounced for cases in which parties have children in common and in which a
 ccess to SDVCs is more limited. Linking the case data to administrative 
 and survey data on judges\, we show that the priorities of judges assign
 ed to SDVCs play a prominent role in explaining these outcomes. Here’s t

 chooses an action based on her private information and a recommendation 
 from an informed but potentially misaligned adviser. With a known probab
 ility\, the adviser truthfully reports his signal\; with the remaining p
 robability\, he can send any message. We characterize optimal robust dec
 ision rules that maximize the agent's worst-case expected payoff. Every 
 optimal rule is equivalent to a trust-region policy i belief space: the 
 adviser's reported beliefs are taken at face value if they fall within t
 he trust region but are otherwise clipped to the trust region's boundary
 . We derive alignment thresholds above which advice is strictly valuable
  and fully characterize the solution in both binary-state and binary-act
 ion environments.

 ion that minimizes the winner's privacy loss among those that maximize t

  disclosed price\, and is quantified by the mutual information between t

 n and S Ghosal). Abstract: We develop a dynamic theory of how structural
  disadvantage shapes outcomes through the interaction of cognitive const
 raints and psychological determinants of efforts. We relate locus of con
 trol\, self-efficacy\, and grit to perceived returns to effort\, and stu
 dy aspirations in an extension. Individuals differ in exogenous circumst
 ances\, such as class\, caste\, race\, gender\, or inherited wealth\, wh
 ich affect the payoff or likelihood of success from effort. Beliefs abou
 t returns to effort evolve only through effort itself. Disadvantage rais
 es the belief threshold required to justify effort\, making disadvantage
 d individuals more likely to stop trying before learning their true retu
 rns. External locus of control\, low self-efficacy\, and weak grit can t
 herefore emerge endogenously. We distinguish standard traps\, which aris
 e even for farsighted agents\, from behavioral traps\, which arise under
  partial myopia. Cash transfers\, subsidies\, and access policies lower 
 effort thresholds\; psychological\, role-model\, and grit interventions 
 sustain beliefs.

 on) Abstract: Research on female political representation has tended to 
 overlook the traditional role of women as leaders across many societies.
  Our study aims to address this gap by investigating the enduring influe
 nce of historical female political leadership on contemporary formal pol
 itical representation in Africa. We test for this persistence by compili
 ng two original datasets: one detailing female political leadership in p
 recolonial societies and another on current female representation in loc
 al elections. Our findings indicate that ethnic groups historically allo
 wing women in leadership roles in politics do tend to have a higher prop
 ortion of elected female representatives in today's formal local politic
 al institutions. We also observe that institutional\, rather than econom
 ic\, factors significantly shape the traditional political influence of 
 women. Moreover\, in accordance with historical accounts\, we uncover ev
 idence of a reversal of female political power due to institutional chan
 ges enforced by colonial powers.

 l\, Dao Daouda Abstract: Households in low-income agricultural economies
  face large seasonal fluctuations in income and limited access to financ
 ial tools for smoothing consumption. In such settings\, health insurance
  can serve not only as risk protection\, but also as a state-contingent 
 savings technology\, transferring resources from high-income harvest per
 iods to low-income lean periods. We study the rollout of Côte d'Ivoire's
  national health insurance scheme in a context with high morbidity\, sub
 stantial out-of-pocket expenditures\, and pronounced income seasonality-
 --conditions under which the potential welfare gains from insurance are 
 particularly large. Using a randomized subsidy design among 2\,468 cocoa
 -farming households\, we show that insurance demand is highly responsive
  to both price and cash-on-hand liquidity. Despite strong demand and act
 uarially favorable pricing\, we find limited effects on health spending 
 or consumption. We show that this disconnect arises from frictions in ac
 cessing benefits\, including weak verification and reimbursement environ
 ments that limit providers' willingness to honor coverage without immedi
 ate proof. Our results highlight the importance of implementation\, trus
 t\, and contract enforceability in determining the welfare impacts of so
 cial insurance.
