DESCRIPTION:Getting involved with public engagement is a fantastic opport
unity for students. The skills they learn and the opportunities engaged
teaching offers them set them up for careers inside and outside of acade
mia. Across Warwick there are dozens of examples of modules/ lessons bei
ng created that either focus on teaching students about public engagemen
t\, or use engaged methods to teach students about a wide variety of top
ics. Everything from encouraging students to develop hands on activities
\, podcasts\, or videos to explain a topic to a lay audience\, up to bui
lding collaborative partnerships between students and communities. This
workshop will build on work done by the Public and Community Engagement
Pedagogies Learning Circle to curate a handbook of examples of these eng
aged pedagogies (methods of teaching). If you're interested in exploring
how you could create something like this in your department this sessio
n is a great opportunity to hear about practice from across Warwick and
spend time considering the detailed practicalities - for example how mig
ht ethics and assessment come up for you? You'll be supported to design
your own solution and receive peer feedback or your design.

DESCRIPTION:There are lots of times when we have to convey who we are and
what we do\; in job interviews\, meetings\, presentations or even just
socially. Many of us undersell ourselves and our achievements\, blend in
to the crowd\, or struggle to fit everything into one cohesive narrativ
 e. Well\, storytelling can help you create and convey your personal bran
 d. Personal branding is an exercise in finding your uniqueness\, buildin
g a reputation on the things you want to be known for\, and then allowin
g yourself to be known for them. In this training\, you’ll learn how to
define your personal brand\, and communicate that effectively through wr
iting\, presenting\, images\, websites and social media. You’ll do exerc
ises which will help you see yourself from an outsider’s perspective\, i
dentify your strengths\, and be given the tools to make you the hero of
your own story. You'll leave this workshop with the skeleton structure o
f your career story that can be used at job interviews\, presentations a
nd networking events\, along with a handful of storytelling tools that c
an be applied to all sorts of writing and presenting in the future. Abou
t your trainer Dr Anna Ploszajski is an award-winning materials scientis
 t\, writer\, presenter\, podcaster\, performer\, trainer and storyteller
based in London. She has produced and presented her podcast\, Handmade\
, for five years\, in which she interviews crafters\, makers\, movers an
d shakers about the world of materials and making. These conversations w
ere the inspiration for her first book\, Handmade: A Scientist’s Search
for Meaning Through Making\, published by Bloomsbury. Anna is an industr
y specialist in helping scientists and researchers translate their techn
ical content for the audio medium\; she has sat on the panel for the Bri
tish Podcast Awards’ Pulse Award and trains academics and students in pl
anning and producing podcasts for science communication and public engag
ement. In her spare time\, Anna plays the trumpet in a funk and soul cov
ers band and is an ultra-endurance open water swimmer. Oh\, and it’s pro

o each other and also to non-experts. Good speakers talk with clarity an

od news is that presentation skills can be learned. Nerves can be tamed\
