UCU strike action from February 2018: student guidance

We are working very hard to mitigate the impact of industrial action on the University’s activities, and particularly on student progression and student experience. We recognise that the planned strike fall at a busy time of the academic year and that this will create understandable anxieties for some students, and we hope to ensure that there is as little disruption as possible.

The following information is therefore to:

- explain the University’s position as an employer in response to staff members deciding to take strike action;
- explain how the University is seeking to manage the impact of strike action on students.

Background

University and College Union (UCU) members have voted to take strike action from 22 February for a four-week period, and to take action short of a strike (ASOS) from 22 February to 19 June.

At Warwick, we are asking staff to focus their contractual time on assessment, feedback, teaching and other activities which enable student to progress and succeed. Where individuals do stop work, or only partially deliver their contractual obligations, we reserve the right to withhold an element of pay.

There are 14 potential days of strike action:

  • Week one - Thursday 22 and Friday 23 February
  • Week two - Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February
  • Week three - Monday 5, Tuesday 6, Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 March
  • Week four - Monday 12, Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14, Thursday 15 and Friday 16 March

What are we doing at Warwick?

We are looking at the full range of services and events that may be impacted by strike action across academic departments, professional services and commercial departments and we are working very hard to mitigate the impact of industrial action on the University’s activities, and particularly on student progression and student experience.

Departments are putting plans in place to continue to be able to deliver teaching and other core activities through alternative means should disruption occur. This includes the prioritisation of timetabled teaching, setting and marking examinations, other forms of assessment, invigilation, attendance at examination boards and vivas, organisation of degree ceremonies, offer-holder days, facilitating core academic commitments, planned visitor events and other key services.

We are also providing guidance and support to students, heads of department and staff impacted by, or planning to take industrial action.

Updates

We are providing guidance via staff channels for heads of departments and individuals planning to strike. We will share general updates with the student community regularly over the coming weeks. We have also collated frequently asked questions for students and staff and will add to these as further queries come in.
