Du, Tao - Tom

Tom in Trafalgar Square, London

My English name is Tom.  I graduated from Shanghai Institute of Electric Power,PRC in 1995.  I majored in Automation of Electric System.  My first job was responsible for technology in a special cable company.  In 1999, I went to Donghua University, PRC to study Business Administration in my spare time and I got a Master’s Degree three years later.

Now, I work in Shanghai Minhang Association for Science and Technology as a civil servant.  My present position is vice director.  The association is dedicated to making a significant contribution to the prosperity and development of science and technology, to the popularization of science and technology among the public, to the emerging of large numbers of professional talents, and to the overall economic and social development in China.  Since this job may help people a lot, I like it very much.

I have a happy family.  My wife is a tour agent, so we enjoy travelling a lot in our leisure time.  We have a lovely daughter who is only 27 months old.  She brings the family lots of laughter.

I was born in the north-east china.  It is very different to Shanghai.  I like to experience different things and different cultures.  I believe that difference makes people think and makes people colourful.  It is a great chance for me to study in University of Warwick during the next six months and I hope to experience more diversity while I am in the UK.

Tom gave his final presentation on 5 June 2009 in which he reflected on the tourism industry in the UK:  PowerPoint slides and Word script.
