This key section is provided to assist with the integration of theory and practice in the interview situation. The purpose is to help you refine and develop a creative and distinctive approach to career coaching. It is also designed to help with the assignment. The section is divided into two pages. Page one consists of three parts to be undertaken in order: A) Online reading; B) Online lecture; and C) Moving to practice. Page two provides resources to explore Patton and McMahon's Systems Theory Framework in relation to Career Coaching and Counselling and further reading on integrating theory and practice.
A/ Online reading
Please now read Chapter Two on Career Development Theory from Gothard (2001) in the core reading. This reading will help you understand a range of key concepts from career development theories. Make notes on the key concepts as you are reading.
B/ Online lecture
Once you have read and made notes on the chapter, listen to the talk below and respond to the exercises contained within it. You are invited to use the forum to share ideas.
C/ Moving to practice
Well done, you have now considered how the start, middle and end of a career coaching conversation can be enhanced using key concepts directly from career development theories. Next steps are to plan and undertake a career coaching discussion drawing from this.
Start: prepare and deliver a 5 minute introduction to a career coaching conversation based on a selection of key career development concepts. Use this to inform the agreement of a working alliance e.g. how you see your role and the scope of the discussion.
Middle: use key concepts to enhance exploration and client learning.
Endings: agree actions to further develop client learning.
