Daisy chain thread: 'Reading' the career of a public figure (use the forum for this module)
This activity is designed to get us started in 'reading' career development by exploring the career of a public figure (i.e. a person for whom some information is publicly available). I have posted some reflections on the career development of Boris Johnson to get us started. Please read this and then undertake steps 1/ and 2/ below. The idea is to construct a daisy chain of posts with each of us both commenting on someone else's post and selecting a public figure for comment. For instance, if you are the second person to post (following mine) then you are asked to comment briefly on my posting and add your own example. The third person will comment on the second person's post and add an example, the fourth will comment on the third and add one, and so on, leading to a daisy chain effect. I will also add posts as we go.

Consider the most recent posting of a public figure to this thread and make a brief comment on it.
2/ Selecting a public figure
You are invited to select another public figure that interests you and for whom there is some information generally available concerning his/her career development (e.g. newspaper, magazine or web article, biography, autobiography). Use one or more of the key concepts covered in this module to interpret the person's career development i.e. to take a brief 'reading' of career.
You are only asked to make one posting covering both 1/ and 2/ although more than one post is also welcome. Posts are intended to be fairly informal and short. There are no right or wrong answers. Posting is voluntary and you are alternatively welcome to discuss your formative work on this module individually in tutorial.
Career development theories project (5000 word limit: weighting 100%)
This module is summatively assessed via a project consisting of two parts. The first part consists of a career development video case study. A video, transcript and preliminary questions are supplied to support your interpretation of the case study using the key concepts. The second part of the assignment is very much about your context. We ask you to construct a case study and use selected key concepts to gain fresh insights into career development and inform your practice.
1/ Critique of video case study (2500 words)
This case study is based on taking multiple readings of the video and transcript (Danny). First, you are asked to listen to the video. For the critique, you are then asked to interpret Danny's career making reference to the key concepts starting with Krumboltz and then Holland, Super, Law, Hodkinson, Cochran and Savickas. Some preliminary questions are provided. The emphasis in this part is on showing your detailed understanding of seven career development theories by interpreting an individual's career development.
In order to help with this, you are asked to download your copy of the transcript. Use the ‘New comments / Insert comments’ command in Word (or equivalent) to insert your annotations linked to the key concepts in the module slides. A brief example is provided. Submit the annotated transcript as an appendix (the transcript is not part of the word count).
2/ Critique of self-selected case study (2500 words)
First, you are asked to find someone who is prepared to be interviewed by you as part of a career development case study (i.e. not acting as a client). The case study should be around 30 minutes long and anonymised. Make an audio recording of the person's account of their career development. The participant's signed agreement to this process should be obtained.
Turning to the critique, select two career development theories only and provide a brief justification for your choice. These can be drawn from the module slides and/or wider reading. If the latter, please briefly describe and reference the key concepts selected and discuss the choice with your module leader. Use the key concepts to interpret the case study. Based wholly on your interpretation of the case study using the selected key concepts, suggest some ways to enhance the career development learning of the person in the case study in the present and the past. You are asked to consider a range of actions including but not necessarily confined to: one-to-one discussions, career information, group work, work experience, desk research, meeting or interacting with others, self-reflection, marketing and management of career support services and so on. The emphasis here is on using your reading of career development to suggest practice.
In order to help with the critique, you are asked to transcribe and annotate the case study using the key concepts from the two career development theories. Submit the annotated transcript as an appendix (this is not part of the word count).
Submit both parts of the project at the same time. The assignment must be submitted using the the online submission system. You will be invited to give overall feedback on the module as part of this. Word limits must be adhered to within a 10% leeway and excessive length will be penalised. Coursework will be assessed against the learning outcomes described in the module specification and postgraduate assessment criteria. The course guide to referencing (e.g. citation style, use of reference list and bibliography) must be used. Links to all these elements are available in the online student handbook in the student course space.
