A brief overview of the module

This module is designed to help you integrate career development theory within your practice. To assist with this task, we will introduce you to the 'Iceberg' metaphor. The Iceberg metaphor provides a way of making links between theories, and between theory and practice. During the module we invite you to experiment with the Iceberg, and to construct your own approach to thinking about career. 

The module will introduce you to two traditions of career development theory. First the classic psychological theories developed by John Holland and Donald Super will be presented. These have been selected for their abiding power and influence in the field of career development. They represent what has been called the tradition of the 'objective career'.

In this first section, Bill Law's Community Interaction Theory is also included. Bill's early work is significant, not least because it acknowledges the significance of culture and that careers are constructed within communities. This serves as a useful bridge to the second part of the module. In this second part we introduce you to the tradition of the 'subjective career' - this includes the development of narrative approaches to career development. Larry Cochran's and Mark Savickas' work have been selected as exemplars of this tradition.

As you will see, the module is delivered via a series of narrated PowerPoint presentations. Some of the PowerPoint files are quite large, so you may find it more convenient to save and download to your computer. Each presentation comes with a supporting transcript of the narration to help you to review and revisit the content.

The module is also supported by two video interviews, the second of which forms the basis for the first assessed case study. A full transcript of this interview is also included to support the construction of your case study.

The final part of the module is very much about your practice and professional context. We ask you to construct a case study of your work with a particular client, using career development theory to gain fresh insights into your practice.
