1. Work experience and career development

For this exercise, we will look for the contribution that work experience makes to the career development learning of a number of case studies. These case studies are taken from the icould website at, a useful source of career stories for use with learners.Have a look at a selection of these interviews:

Next, go to the forum and select the thread on 'work experience and career development'. Post your comments on the case study/studies you have viewed. You might wish to comment on how work experience featured in the story, how they found their work experience, what the person learned from their work experience or any other comments. Can you relate any of the metaphors of career that we looked at to the case study? What metaphors do they use to describe their career? Which of the factors in the 'systems theory' diagram are most relevant?

Remember, only students on this module and CSU staff can see your comments. There are no right or wrong answers, just sharing ideas and perspectives. Please also comment on one anothers posts to question and extend the considerations.


Summative assessment (assessment on which your overall module mark will be based)


Part 1: Individual Case Study (2500 words)

First, you are asked to find someone who is prepared to be interviewed by you as part of a work experience case study. This could be anyone who has recently completed a period of work experience.

The case study should be around 30 minutes long and anonymised. Make an audio recording of the person's account of their work experience and how it has contributed to their career development and their employability. The participant's signed agreement to this process should be obtained.

In order to help with the critique, you are asked to transcribe and annotate the case study using the key concepts from the module materials. Submit the annotated transcript as an appendix (this is not part of the word count).

Turning to the critique, use the key concepts to interpret the case study. Based wholly on your interpretation of the case study using the selected key concepts, comment on the individual's career development, their experience of gaining work experience, their learning from it, and any further comments on their employability.

Part 2: Institutional Case Study (2500 words)

Secondly, you are asked to conduct a case study of an educational institution to analyse the way work experience, career development and employability are supported.

Case studies are accounts of something happening in real life, being examined from a number of angles and they allow you to look at issues in context, using the theory you have learnt about already.

We will discuss how you can negotiate access to a school, college or University on the teaching days.

In constructing your case study you will find it helfpul to:

Map all work experience related activities within a partcular department or organisation that contribute to employability and career development learning.

Comment on :

  • the impact of organisational and public policy developments
  • the ways in which learners are enabled to identify the employability and career development learning outcomes of their work experience.
  • how effective the approach is in encouraging the participation of all stakeholders in employability.
  • the overall effectiveness of the activities in promoting work experience.

Make some recommendations for the department or organisation to enhance practice based on your analysis

Final points

Submit both parts of the project at the same time. The assignment must be submitted using the the online submission system. You will be invited to give overall feedback on the module as part of this. Word limits must be adhered to within a 10% leeway and excessive length will be penalised. Coursework will be assessed against the learning outcomes described in the module specification and postgraduate assessment criteria. The course guide to referencing (e.g. citation style, use of reference list and bibliography) must be used. Links to all these elements are available in the online student handbook in the student course space.
