1. Formative assessment
Constructing the working alliance (use the online forum for this module)
View the Phil & Melissa video paying particular attention to the first 15 minutes. Whilst you are doing this, make notes on the construction of the working alliance. Once you have done this, share one idea in relation to your own evolving practice e.g. at least one topic that you would like to include in the alliance. Share this and any other reactions by 30th September 2014 in the online forum thread Formative assessment: Constructing the working alliance.
2. Summative assessment
Interview critique (word limit 2500; weighting 100%)
Arrange for some of your interviews to be recorded with the clients' consent. Select an interview lasting between 15-50 minutes that you consider competent. Transcribe this interview fully showing the words used by yourself and the client. Annotate this transcript using the 'Insert Comment' command or equivalent. The annotations should be brief but begin to show your understanding of two career development theories, an interview framework, contracting skills and additional interviewing skills (see 2.1 to 2.4 below).
Cross referring to the annotations, then complete a 2500 word critique of the interview. The emphasis is on using the annotations to reflect on strengths and weaknesses in your own practice and ideas for the development of this. The critique should cover in more detail:
2.1 Key concepts: the key concepts from two selected career development theories (e.g. Holland, Super, Law, Hodkinson, Krumboltz, Cochran or Savickas). The focus here is on using the key concepts to creatively critique, and suggest enhancement of, your practice.
2.2 Interview framework: one selected interview framework (e.g. Mignot, Ali & Graham, Hazen & Steckler or Bedford).
2.1 Constructing the working alliance: building the relationship (e.g. clarifying and understanding respective roles; making clear the client’s agenda and your agenda; showing the client you have understood his/her agenda; agreeing how to address both agendas; agreeing movement through the interview; re-contracting and next steps).
2.4 Additional skills: Additional interviewing skills (e.g. listening, exploring, summarising and agreeing action).
Once complete, send the 2500 word critique of the selected interview and the transcript (attached as an appendix to the critique) to Warwick using the online submission system and post the recording. Submit all these elements to arrive in time for the module hand-in date. The recording should be clearly audible and in hard copy format (audio CD, DVD or memory stick).
Word limits must be adhered to within a 10% leeway and work over/under this will be penalised. Coursework will be assessed against the learning outcomes described in the module specification and postgraduate assessment criteria. The course guide to referencing (e.g. citation style, use of reference list and bibliography) must be used. The assignment must be submitted using the the online submission system. You will be invited to give overall feedback on the module as part of this. Links to all these elements are available in the online student handbook in the student course space.
