Introduction and context
This interview lasts around 45 minutes and is primarily selected in order to focus on the interviewer's technique. The client is not in higher education but considering this amongst other options.
You are asked to evaluate the conduct of the interview paying particular attention to the process of constructing the working alliance. This takes place throughout discussion and particularly in the first 15 minutes. Make notes on how the alliance is agreed:
- the adviser's role
- the adviser's agenda
- the client's agenda
- showing the client her agenda has been understood
- agreeing how to address both agendas
- agreeing movement through the interview e.g. next steps; re-contracting
Consider how knowledge of career development theories informs the adviser's practice.
