Aims
The Psychometric Assessment module enables participants to understand psychometric assessment and its role in career education and guidance work. The module is designed to develop reflective practice in psychometric assessment focusing on: theories of personality; statistical methods used in assessment; reliability and validity; administration and scoring; feedback; and the application of assessment in a career education and guidance context.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Discuss theories of personality.
  • Identify statistical methods used in assessment.
  • Explain reliability and validity.
  • Describe administration and scoring.
  • Define assessment feedback.
  • Outline the application of assessment in a career education and guidance context.
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the knowledge and understanding listed above through administering a psychometric assessment and integrating it within the process of career education and guidance.
  • Integrate theory and practice in psychometric assessment.
  • Develop assessment skills on the basis of the evaluation and analysis undertaken.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding to the administration of a psychometric assessment and the process of career education and guidance.
  • Communicate in written and oral form by integrating, analysing and applying key texts and professional practices.

Outline Syllabus

  • Articulation of participants’ prior experience in psychometric assessment.
  • Theories of personality.
  • Statistical methods.
  • Reliability and validity.
  • Administration and scoring.
  • Assessment feedback.
  • The application of assessment in a career education and guidance context.
  • Use of the above to underpin psychometric assessment practice via role plays, small group work and tests.
  • Professional ethics, theoretical perspectives and values associated with psychometric assessment in a careers work context, for example, client-centredness, impartiality, client learning, reflective practice and respect for diversity.

Summary of teaching
30 hours of blended learning. There are two relevant AGCAS training courses advertised in the AGCAS online calendar and either can be used as a basis for this module.
1/ The Test User Ability Certificate of Competence in Occupational Testing (formerly known as 'Level A') consists of on-line study materials and assessment of practical elements of the course online using Skype or similar.
2/ The MBTI Foundation Programme consists of a residential course.
Please note that, whichever route is used, the module involves undertaking further reading, tutorial support and a Warwick assignment following completion of the training course.
 
Module timing and duration
Usually, Test User Ability runs all year round and MBTI tends to run twice a year. Participants are allowed 5 months to complete.

Summative assessment
The assignment consists of a 5000 word project (100%). Typically, participants are asked to carry out a psychometric assessment for career development purposes and evaluate the principles and practice of psychometric assessment more generally. Before enrolling on this module, you must ensure that you will be able to undertake psychometric assessment with a client within the 5 month timescale.
