The assignment below was updated in January 2014 and is the current version for this module. It contains both formative and summative assessments. The formative part is designed to 'help us help each other' prior to the summative submission. It is designed to be fairly informal and there are no right and wrong answers!
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: FORUM
1/ Discussing training and coaching resources
This activity is designed to help us continue discussing training and coaching. To get us started, I have published some material on career management in the practical example section. Following this, you are asked to make one posting in the forum by 30th April 2014. More than one post is also welcome. Posts are intended to be fairly informal and short. Posting is voluntary and you are alternatively welcome to discuss your formative work on this module individually in tutorial.
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT: TRAINING AND COACHING PROJECT (1 & 2)
1/ Group training session (recording and 2500 word critique; weighting 50%)
You are asked to run a facilitated group training session for peers or colleagues. The session should be up to 60 minutes long and recorded. The recording should be submitted on stick, DVD or CD-ROM with your voice clearly audible. The session can be online or face-to-face. A critique of 2500 words should be submitted with the recording.
The critique should include:
1.1 A brief description of the participant group and the context of the session.
1.2 An evaluation of the session design covering: contracting; group dynamics; rationale for the design of learning outcomes linked to 1 or 2 theories of learning and development; assessment of learning; evaluation; and ethical issues.
1.3 A session plan attached as an appendix to the critique stating: session aim; learning outcomes; training methods; activities; and plans for assessment of learning outcomes and evaluation. (This does not form part of the the word count).
2/ Mentoring or coaching relationship (diary and 2500 word critique; weighting 50%)
You are asked to undertake a mentoring or coaching relationship, record the progress of the relationship in a diary and submit a 2500 word critique of the relationship along with the diary. The relationship can take place face-to-face or at a distance. The diary should include a description of the context of the relationship and a record of the contract you agreed with your participant. A description of the discussions that took place and the participant’s response to these interactions should be included. (The diary should be attached as an appendix to the critique and does not form part of the word count).
The critique should include:
2.1 A theoretically-informed interpretation of the participant's career development.
2.2 Evaluation of the actions you took related to 1 or 2 theories of coaching or mentoring.
2.3 Consideration of the participant’s evaluation of the relationship.
2.4 Suggestions for the enhancement of your practice linked to 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.
In total, the project report should be 5,000 words in length (excluding reference list and appendices). Once complete, send the project to Warwick using the course online submission system by the hand-in date. You will be invited to give overall feedback on the module as part of this. The overall word limit must be adhered to within a 10% leeway and excessive length will be penalised. Coursework will be assessed against the learning outcomes described in the module specification and postgraduate assessment criteria. The course guide to referencing (e.g. citation style, use of reference list and bibliography) must be used. Links to all these elements are available in the online student handbook in the student course space.
