Hall and Chandler have also connected calling with the positive psychology movement, which has come to popular prominence through the work of Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi. A short overview of positive psychology is available in this 5 minute film.
Whilst this film makes a number of contestable claims, particularly about the nature of inquiry, it highlights positive psychology's contribution to the understanding of 'well being' which includes the subjective construct of 'meaning'. The film highlights three branches of positive psychology:
- Flow (including the assessment of individual strengths)
- Learned optimism
All of these give rise to resources that can help individuals discern and pursue their calling.
