Getting started


Overview

This module is designed for any member of staff involved in higher education careers work. This includes, but is not confined to, employer relations professionals, careers advisers, information staff, career educators, managers, employability, marketing and project staff. It is designed to broaden and deepen understanding of graduate employer and labour market work for all HE staff.

The overall focus of the module is on an intelligence-led approach and the integration of employer liaison functions. The importance of developing intelligence-led initiatives in employer liaison is underlined by the growing diversity of higher education provision. There is also a focus on the integration of employer liaison work across different services and functions including: career information, destinations, career counselling, employer events, labour market research, vacancy handling, marketing and wider university initiatives.

Module reading pack
You will need the module reading pack to undertake the activities in the module. This will have been sent to you along with the module acceptance letter. Please email career.studies@warwick.ac.uk if it has not arrived. The teaching materials are organised around the reading pack and designed to support postgraduate-level reading on the topic of graduate employers and labour markets. Consequently, the module involves a considerable amount of reading from peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, policy and professional publications. As you move throug the module, there are a range of activities including case studies, discussion group activity and field visits, leading to the summative assignment. This will be based on your workplace context.

About me
My name is Phil McCash and I am the module leader for the Graduate Employers and Labour Markets module. I am your main academic point of contact for this module, and you are welcome to email me with any questions. As you are studying at a distance, you may find it helpful to do this, as you do not have the opportunity for asking queries during conventional lectures. My email is p.t.mccash@warwick.ac.uk

I am pleased to be involved with this module, as I believe it is central to the work of HE career development and employability professionals. Understanding graduate employers and labour markets enables us and our clients to develop intelligence-led approaches. This subject is very fertile with a number of important recent contributions to the field. I look forward to exploring these with you.

In terms of my own experience, I have been involved in working with employers and labour markets for 20 years through researching occupational information, employer events, vacancy handling, destinations work and web developments. My experience has also been developed through bid-writing and contributing to AGCAS publications.

About you
At any one time there is likely to be at least one other person registered on this module and usually there will be more. So, just as we do in classroom situations, I would like to invite all new registrants on this module to introduce themselves to current registrants. Please use the Forum page to introduce yourself by stating name, role, institution and why you have selected this module. You are asked to do this now before moving on to the next section.

Students enrolled on or progressing from the PG Certificate GELM module (10 credits)
Students enrolled on the PG Certificate need only complete sections 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. You are of course welcome to read other sections and participate in the media watch and employer visit activities if you wish. For example, you may find the E-resources section useful in attempting the assignment.

Students progressing from the 10 credit module (entitled Employer Relations or Graduate Employers and Labour Market) will have already completed parts of this module (or equivalent). You will therefore only have to complete the four sections: 3, 9, 10, and 11. In terms of the assignment, only the formative assessment activity and Part 2 of the summative assessment (the Study) need to be completed i.e. not Part 1 (the Report). This is explained again in the assignment section.

Completing the course work and assignments
As you progress through the course materials, you will encounter questions to respond to under the subheading Reflection Questions. You are advised to keep a record of your responses as you go. You are invited to use the Reflection Questions thread in the Forum to post on any question in order to interact with other participants.

Assignment
You will find the Assignment in the module menu. I suggest you read this briefly before going further. The detail may not make much sense to you yet as it contains references to reading you are probably not familiar with. It contains, however, important information about submission of coursework. You will find this helpful in planning your work for this module.
