Career Studies Unit Course Directors Attend National Conferences

Gill Frigerio and Phil McCash, Course Directors in the Career Studies Unit, have both recently attended conferences.

Phil McCash attended the Association of Higher Education Careers Services conference in Dublin.

Members of the Association of Higher Education Careers Services (AHECS) are intending to develop an employability module relevant to Irish higher education students. To facilitate this process, Phil McCash was invited to deliver a workshop in Dublin on 6th September 2012. Phil discussed a range of perspectives to aid in the design of the module drawing from experiential, critical and constructivist approaches in teaching and learning. A particular focus of the session was on the integration of theory and practice. In a highly practical session, the group began to construct constituent workshops and have taken away ideas for 18 additional sessions. There is a great deal of expertise in the group and already some very imaginative and innovative ideas have been proposed. The group are now poised to continue this creative phase, consult more widely and develop more detailed plans. Phil has agreed to maintain contact and provide on-going support as needed.

Gill Frigerio recently attended the ASET 2012 conference for placement and employability professionals at the University of Chester.

Gill gave two workshop presentations as part of the conference. The first, on the Management of Student Work Experience qualification, outlined how these blended learning postgraduate programmes can contribute to the continuing professional development of placement practitioners. Gill was joined by MSWE Student of the year Sam Forde, who explained how her MSWE studies have informed her work both at Glyndwr University and her national role in the National Association for Student Employment Services.

Gill also presented (alongside co-author Richard Mendez) on the CSU publication ‘Re-designing work-related learning’ This publication, available here models a process of course design and details a potential placement module for management students, based on a theoretically informed and integrated approach to placement learning. The publication includes freely available teaching resources for placement practitioners to adapt and use.

The theme of the conference was ‘Adding Value: Measuring Impact’ and included a series of sessions on the new QAA ‘Quality Code’ and its impact on placement learning. One of the ‘indicators of sound practice’ in the new code is that staff involved in supporting student learning are appropriately ‘qualified and supported’ and the MSWE qualification can provide useful evidence of this.
