Initial Teacher Training Courses

Initial Teacher Training in the Centre for Lifelong Learning exists to provide high quality teacher education and professional development for those working in the FE and Skills sector.
We offer a wide variety of Initial Teacher Training and CPD courses. Please select any courses in which you are interested to find out more.
Most FE organisations will require a teacher to hold the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or the PGDE, if they are in the full teaching role (Full or part time).

Initial Teacher Training

with an undergraduate degree but no teaching qualification

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (FE and Skills Sector) (placement provided)
Looking for a qualification to teach in FE colleges, sixth forms, prisons, adult education or work-based settings?
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education - PGDE - is similar to a PGCE but is all at Level 7 and offers the additional benefit of studying a specialist module e.g. English, maths. Please note specialisms are subject to availability and change.

with level 3 qualifications e.g. A-Levels, BTEC Advanced, NVQs, Access etc.; English Level 2, Maths Level 1 and in a teaching role

Certificate in Education and Training (Level 4) (36 Credits)
Develop practical teaching skills and prepare to work in a wide range of contexts.

Diploma in Education and Training (Level 5)
Training if you aspire to, or hold, a teaching role with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities, including those in more than one context.

Diploma in Education and Training (English: Literacy) (Level 5)
Become qualified with one qualification covering both generic and subject specialist skills, knowledge and understanding; explore the theory and practice of adult literacy teaching.

Diploma in Education and Training (Mathematics: Numeracy) (Level 5) Become qualified with one qualification covering both generic and subject specialist skills, knowledge and understanding.

Diploma in Education and Training: SEND (Level 5) Become qualified with one qualification covering both generic and subject specialist skills, knowledge and understanding.


CPD

with a full generic teaching qualification e.g. DTLLS, Cert Ed, PGCE, 7407 Stage 4 etc.; Maths Level 2, English Level 2 and in a teaching role

Diploma in Teaching: SEND (Level 5)
Develop your knowledge and understanding of teaching disabled learners; explore a range of specific learning and disability impairments, and develop the skills to be able to plan, deliver and assess inclusive learning.

Diploma in Teaching English: Literacy (Level 5)
Explore the theory and practice of adult literacy teaching; includes modules based on literacy, a series of assignments, teaching observations, reflective practice, portfolio work and on-going tutorial support.

Diploma in Teaching Functional English (Level 5)
New blended stand-alone diploma programmes for vocational teachers teaching Functional English.

Diploma in Teaching Mathematics: (Level 5)
Explore topics such as Numeracy and the Learners, Developing Numeracy Knowledge and Understanding and Numeracy Learning and Teaching.

Supporting teachers to deliver GCSE English (Level 5)
Training to support those who are taking or re-sitting GCSE English, especially those aged 16-19, including strategies to motivate learners.

Supporting teachers to deliver GCSE Mathematics (Level 5)
Training to support those who are taking or re-sitting GCSE Mathematics, especially those aged 16-19, including strategies to motivate learners.

No previous qualifications; operating at level 2 English and Maths

Certificate in Education and Training (CET) 12 Credits (Level 4)
This course replaces the AET/PTLLS qualification.

Operating at Level 2 English and Maths; working in a relevant educational context

Coaching and Mentoring (Level 4)
The programme is for practitioners working in the Lifelong Learning Sector who wish to work effectively with peers and mentees for the purpose of continuous professional development.

Supporting Functional English in the Vocational Curriculum
This 30 hour (FHEQ4, 10 credit) programme provides vocational teachers in the FE and Skills Sector with the underpinning knowledge and skills to plan and deliver Functional English to vocational learners.

Supporting Functional Mathematics in the Vocational Curriculum This 30 hour (FHEQ4, 10 credit) programme provides vocational teachers in the FE and Skills Sector with the underpinning knowledge and skills to plan and deliver Functional Mathematics to vocational learners.

Supporting Functional Skills in the Vocational Curriculum
This 30 hour (HE level 1, 10 credit) programme provides vocational staff in the FE and Skills Sector with the underpinning knowledge and skills to plan and support the development of their learners’ Functional English, mathematics and ICT skills.

Supporting Learning in the FE and Skills Sector
Topics covered include differing contexts for learning support, the role of the support practitioner, key values and principles which underpin learning support practice and the impact of learning support practice on learner progress and achievement.

Teaching and Learning in the FE and Skills Sector: Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
This 24-30 hours (FHEQ4, 10 credit) programme introduces teachers and support practitioners to theories and strategies in relation to teaching disabled learners in the FE and skills sector and to support them with planning, delivery, assessment and critical evaluation within this context.
