Diploma in Education and Training (Teaching English: Literacy)

Level 5 Diploma

This diploma programme allows you to become qualified with one qualification covering both generic and subject specialist skills, knowledge and understanding. This particular course explores the theory and practice of teaching English from Pre- and Entry level through to GCSE. The course includes modules based on literacy and generic teaching themes, a series of assignments, teaching observations, reflective practice, portfolio work and on-going tutorial support.

Entry requirements

Level 3 assessment/qualification in English. Maths at level 2. A cleared DBS check and a subject specialist mentor. A teaching placement or be in a teaching role that provides at least 100 hours of practice over the two years.

IELTS 7.0 or equivalent (speaking and listening at 7.0) with no other component below 6.0.

Course content

Module 1: Subject Specialist Module

• Literacy Theories and Frameworks (themes include grammar, phonology and discourse analysis)
• Literacy Learning and Teaching (themes include the teaching of reading, writing, spelling and resources)
• Literacy and the Learners (themes include language and society, language change and language variety)

Module 2: Generic Teaching Module

• Economic and Political Influences on the FE and Skills Sector
• Curriculum Design
• Reflective Practice
• Action Research

Course induction

You will attend an induction day prior to the start of the course. This is particularly important for an introduction to the IT element of the course.

Taught sessions

You will meet once a month, approximately, for a taught session. Sessions last for a whole day, typically 9.30-4.30 with breaks and lunch. The days are highly interactive and combine a range of pedagogical approaches designed to model good practice and give you ideas which could translate into your own classroom. This usually involves presentation, whole and small group work, peer learning and assessment and the use of a range of new technologies (e.g. voting technology, iPads) to support learning.

Observation of teaching

You will be observed on your teaching 4 times in each module (usually 3 by a subject specialist teacher trainer and one by an experienced subject mentor). It is anticipated that you will build on and develop your practice throughout these observations. You will also have the opportunity to observe a peer. Teaching observations form a key aspect of the summative assessment for this course. Although we work to the Ofsted standards, the emphasis of observations is definitely on development of teaching skills and professional knowledge.

Further Education is diverse and dynamic and includes organisations such as Colleges, Sixth Forms, Secure Estate, Work Based Learning, Adult and Community Education. Programmes are designed to develop teacher trainees to work across the sector. As such those in a limited setting e.g. working with adults only, will be required to arrange widening teaching visits to develop their experience. Information about these visits will be provided on programme.

All trainees will be expected to pass the teaching practice component. If the trainee has not reached good in their teaching practice by the end of programme, they will be required to undertake further observations.


Diploma in Education and Training students complete 9 assignments (over both modules). Assignments provide an opportunity for you to link theory to practice and include themes on discourse analysis, teaching methods, action research and curriculum design. Assignments are a key part of the summative assessment for this course. For those who are new to assignment writing, or may not have done this for some time, there is sound support offered from tutors and a range of online materials to help with academic writing.

Reflective practice

As a teacher trainee, you will be required to relflect on your practice; many of the distance study tasks on this course are reflective in nature. You will keep on-line reflective journals (blogs) which allow a constant dialogue between you and your specialist teacher trainers.

Portfolio of evidence

At the end of the course, you will submit a portfolio of evidence, including distance study tasks, assignments and observation records. This is maintained online using an e-portfolio which will be made available after the course has finished.

Tutorials and support

All students on the Diploma in Education and Training courses will have a subject specialist course tutor and mentor. Online guidance as well as face-to-face opportunities are integral to this course.
