Karly's Case Study

Name of trainee: Karly Quinn

Year completed DTLLS: 2013

Current job title: Part time Hairdressing Lecturer

Current place of employment: NWHC

Background information (starting point)

At the time of her enrolment on the programme Karly worked as a sessional assessor in the Hairdressing Department teaching 19+ students. Karly’s responsibility was to assess NVQ students at level 2. Her vocational background was in Hairdressing and her academic qualifications were limited to NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing but once enrolled onto the DTLLS programme, she achieved Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy at Level 2. Despite the completion of the DTLLS programme being an Employer requirement, Karly’s reasons for enrolling onto DTLLS programme were entirely intrinsic and these factors related wholly to personal gratification. Karly began the programme with more than one barrier to learning: lack of self-confidence, financial issues, a 6 month pregnancy and poor IT skills; the latter proved to be a particular stressor for Karly as she struggled to complete her assignments with no access to a computer. However, Karly only missed one session throughout the DTLLS programme – and this was the week in which she gave birth!

Current position and details on progress

In early 2013, Karly was promoted to a part time Hairdressing lecturer on a permanent contract whereby she teaches 16-19 year olds. Part of her teaching role is to co-ordinate the 19+ programme and is also a personal tutor for this cohort of students. Her sheer commitment and dedication to the programme and to her personal / professional development in general was not only outstanding, but inspirational – not only to her peers, but also to her tutors

Impact of ITT

Karly reported that she ‘found it difficult at times, but I feel that I only completed due to sheer determination and the drive for self gratification’. Karly also stated that she ‘had very good support from my tutors, Jackie Kowalewski and Richard Kelly’. Karly feels that: ‘the DTLLS has provided me with a sense of achievement and has led me into permanent employment within the college. I never thought I had the ability to complete the DTTLS programme; however, as the course progressed my confidence grew’
