100 years of Fircroft College 1909 - 2009

Press Release

Fircroft College of Adult Education celebrated its centenary in style at a Civic Reception at the Council House on 12 January 2009, hosted by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and former Fircroft student, Councillor Chauhdry Rashid. The Civic Reception took place one hundred years to the day since George Cadbury Jr originally founded the College to provide educational opportunities for some of the most disadvantaged and excluded members of society. Nearly 200 current and former staff and students, as well as dignitaries and representatives from the local Education community, were there to mark the centenary and hear speeches from the Lord Mayor and from Fiona Larden (Principal of Fircroft College), Indu Daji (Chair of Birmingham Empowerment Training Initiative), David Cragg (Regional Director of the Learning and Skills Council) and Michael Taylor (Chair of Fircroft Governors).

Principal of Fircroft College, Fiona Larden, commented, ”We are privileged to have the Lord Mayor of Birmingham host this Civic Reception. I’m delighted that so many have gathered to celebrate the history of this unique educational institution, and to recognize the contribution it has made to many people’s lives.”

One hundred years on from its founding, Fircroft’s mission of ‘social justice’ is more relevant than ever. Around 1,500 students a year come to Fircroft College, based in Selly Oak, many of whom have few or no formal qualifications. Students can choose from a wide range of short courses throughout the year, aimed at developing their skills, confidence, knowledge and experience. There are also a number of courses aimed at helping staff and volunteers from voluntary and community organizations, as well as a full-time Access to Higher Education course and a 10 week research programme for the over 55s.
