Mentoring Scoping Study

West Midlands Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training was commissioned to carry out a study to inform Lifelong Learning UK’s future planning in relation to the teaching qualification framework.

In 2007 LLUK recommended clarification of what the minimum level of support for trainees should be, and clearer guidance for employers on how to support them. There were also issues raised which needed clarification, including the aims of mentoring, who the mentor should be, how they should be trained, supported and rewarded, and funding.

The WMCETT study looked at the scope and range of coaching and mentoring activities in the lifelong learning sector which are aimed at the professional development of managers and staff, mainly those in teaching roles.

The aims of the study were to identify:

  • coaching and mentoring activities in the Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training
  • new developments in coaching and mentoring that are planned
  • findings/outcomes from activities to date
  • future and emerging needs in relation to mentoring and coaching to inform national planning

This scoping study looked at what CETTs across the country had found so far in their work on mentoring.

The recommendations included:

  • specifying the different uses and applications of coaching and mentoring in the sector more clearly through further research
  • developing standards and qualifications to accommodate the range of different applications of coaching and mentoring in the lifelong learning sector
  • linking up and sharing lessons from the whole range of coaching and mentoring activities currently being carried out in the sector
  • showcasing CETT initiatives across the sector
