GCSEs for tutors
A number of people who took the GCSE Maths Enhancement Programme expressed a desire to take the GCSE themselves, to help with their teaching of the subject, and some organisation in the West Midlands are going to run GCSE courses aimed at tutors this term (autumn 2014).
One course which is welcoming outside applicants is taking place at Stoke-on-Trent College. There is more information, including how to apply, here.
Another course will be run at Birmingham Adult Education Service, with the intention of holding classes at twilight on Wednesdays. If you are potentially interested in this course, please email Julie Chamberlain, WMCETT Project Manager, at J.email@example.com as soon as possible.
Several universities and colleges in the region offer opportunities for specialist teacher training. Many of these take the form of one-year "additional diplomas" for those who already hold a generic teaching qualification. There are also opportunities for individuals to complete an integrated qualification, which combines a full generic teaching qualification with a maths specialism.
Courses are scheduled to run in 2014-15 at universities including:
- University of Warwick
The University of Warwick is running a one year diploma for those who already hold a generic teaching qualification, and a two-year diploma which integrates a maths subject specialism within a Diploma in Education & Training. Courses are suitable for those working across the further education and training and skills sectors, whether in FE colleges, adult education, work-based learning, the third sector or prisons. They are suitable for those teaching at all levels, from entry to GCSE and beyond. For information about fees and entry requirements see http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/study/cll/othercourses/itt/.
- Staffordshire University
