Active Listening

What do you need to do in order to actively listen to your mentee? What are they really trying to say? What words are they using? What is the story that they are telling?

Try to tune into the story behind the words. What does their body language tell you? What message do their clothes give? What is their posture like? What message do you get from their face? How do they use their hands? What about their feet? Try also to tune into the voice tone of your mentee. What message is their voice giving you? All of these elements come together to build up a picture that says far more than the words alone

Are the messages all in line? Are they congruent? (Rogers, C. 1989)

Hint: To practise your skills of reading body language, turn down the sound on your favourite soap and see what you are able to pick up.
