Course: BA (Hons) Social Studies
Becki studied on our Gateway to HE course before progressing onto the part-time Social Studies degree in 2019.
"My family had been saying for years for me to go to university. It was in September when my kids went to college and I thought what am I going to do now? I realised I wanted to do something. I wanted to go back to university. My family are really supportive and behind me now that I have done it.
I really enjoyed the Gateway to HE course. It really makes you think differently about things and from a different point of view. I learnt how to write an essay, how to research academic journals and how to reference. I learnt this in such a short space of time too. We started off really small with 300 word essays and then progressed up to 1,500 word essays. At first, I was really unsure of the spacing and paragraphing but it all comes naturally now.
Steve, the tutor, is a real people person. He makes you understand by making everything simpler. You feel relaxed around him, he is very approachable.
I had to manage my time effectively. I have 5 kids, so I would do my reading and research while they were at school and then have a break in the afternoon before carrying on again in the evening.
In our class, we were all one big group of friends. We had a group chat on Slack where we would share hints and tips and help each other out. If someone missed a session, they could go on and ask the rest of the group. Sometimes people would record the whole session, so you could easily catch up. We were all really supportive of one another. "
