Course: BA (Hons) Social Work (Degree Apprenticeship)
Claire is a current student on our degree apprenticeship in social work.
Claire works within a really busy team in Leicester City Council, she is based in the Early Help Response Team. The team receive police reports whereby they assess the level of needs and make decisions on the intervention that may or not be required. The police reports are sent when they attend an incident whereby children live in the property or witnessed the incident. The team also deal with referrals from Social Care, this may be a Stepdown when a case is closing to Social Care or when something has not met their thresholds.
Claire chose to do the apprenticeship as it enabled her to work full time and use her experience and link it to the work. Claire said that she feels "this will open so many other doors in the future and I can continue to use my passion and enthusiasm to supporting and empowering people that need it." For Claire the course has offered the chance to explore new things, new ways of thinking and meet new people in addition to learning a lot about herself over the last few months.
Claire's advice to anyone considering the degree apprenticeship would be "go for it. What is stopping you, be prepared to put in a lot of work, however, it is so rewarding. I have had so many light bulb moments since starting the course. I reflect so much more effectively now, I am able to think deeply when applying theory into practice (I still have a long way to go). I feel that my confidence is growing and I work in a different way as to what I did before."
Claire hopes to be a children's social worker following graduation, someone who will make a difference in people's lives.
