Name: Sam
Course: BA (Hons) Social Studies [2+2]Sam

"I first decided to apply to the 2+2 Social Studies degree following redundancy when the youth work project I worked for ended. I knew about the 2+2 degree as my mum was studying on it at the time. Having not studied A-levels when I left school, I had previously thought a degree was out of my reach. However, having seen what my mum achieved in her first two years and with the financial support on offer, I opted to take the leap in the hope of improving my future career prospects.

When I began my degree in 2016 my son was just one years old. Studying with a young child has at times brought its own challenges but particularly over the last couple of months. Having to finish my dissertation and other essays whilst trying to home school and keep my now 5 year old entertained whilst his father was working from home has been particularly hard. However, during this time and throughout my degree I have found the art of list-making an invaluable tool along with making use of weekly planners, further aiding the improvement of my time management skills.

Following my degree, I am hoping to begin a career which will make use of the skills and knowledge I have gained during the last four years. I have especially enjoyed the policy side of the degree and how society both affects and is affected by policy. The 2+2 degree has greatly broadened my knowledge and understanding of how our society operates, altering some of my own preconceptions and making me more open-minded to researching and considering alternative solutions. Overall, I feel this degree has been a fantastic opportunity for me and immensely rewarding. The degree has provided me with a range of transferable skills for both the workplace and everyday life such as relaxation techniques gained on the Mindfulness module, presentation skills both verbal and written and the ability to research and analyse data. As a result of the positive experiences I have had throughout my degree I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a desire to learn, whether this is for personal or professional reasons, there are a broad range of modules available to suit different interests along with possible funding options and life experience based entry rather then having to have A-levels. The 2+2 Social Studies degree is a fantastic opportunity and one I am very grateful for having had the opportunity to partake in."
