Student Profile: Parwiz Hussain

How did you find out about Warwick?

Through the Hornby Trust Scholarship.

Did you consider studying anywhere else? What made you choose Warwick?

I considered studying in India. The MA in TESOL at Warwick is very relevant to my working field. I am a teacher trainer. The Masters Degree at Warwick is a great opportunity to improve my skills in teacher education and development.

When you found out about Warwick, did you contact the University to find out more? Which department?

I contacted Centre for Applied Linguistics (CAL) office. They provided me very helpful information.

How did you apply and did anyone help you with your application form and visa application? Any difficulties?

I had many questions throughout the application process and thanks to CAL office. They helped me through the process a lot by providing clear information and guidance. I do not remember any problem when applying for a visa. The University of Warwick provided enough documents to support me with visa process.

Are you currently receiving any funding?

The Hornby Trust Scholarship.

Was your arrival and orientation okay? What were your first impressions/highlights?

Before arriving I had so many worries about how to adapt with a new environment. The welcome week, and my personal tutor's guidance and support, helped me a lot with adjusting to the new academic environment.

Have you joined any clubs or societies?

I am a member of STAR society helping refugees learn English.

What do you think of your accommodation?

I live off campus and I really like my accommodation. It is a bit expensive, but it's worth it.

Have you travelled during your studies?

I have been to Birmingham many times and London as well. I am planning to explore more places in the UK.

What do you hope to do once you graduate?

When I graduate I will continue my job as a teacher trainer. I want to transfer the skills and knowledge I learnt, to teaching educators in Afghanistan.

What is the best thing about Warwick?

The professionalism of my tutors.

If you were giving advice to a student considering study at Warwick, what advice would you give them?

My advice would be "don't think too much, apply for a degree."
