Mathematics of Systems - MSc leading to PhD (Full-Time, 2019 Entry)

Would you like to learn how to use novel mathematics to tackle real-world problems? This course bridges three key areas: Complexity Science; Systems Biology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research. The taught element will equip you with the necessary skills required for the PhD, where you can work on specialist mathematical solutions to global challenges.

You’ll have the opportunity to identify real-world systems and explore how they can benefit from mathematical techniques. You’ll combine cutting-edge mathematical skills with the ability to understand and model real-world systems. You’ll also learn how to analyse complex data sets, work well in multidisciplinary teams and become an effective communicator.

Teaching:

A 1+3 year MSc and PhD.

The full-time MSc year is dedicated to developing a broad portfolio of mathematical techniques and partaking in small research problems with a strong emphasis on applied questions and practical approaches.

The PhD years train you into an independent researcher developing and using new mathematics to solve real-world systems challenges under the guidance of two supervisors and in the context of real-world systems problems coming from our external partners or others, in health, industry and finance.

Contact Hours:

Contact hours will vary between 12 and 14 each week.

Class Sizes:

The class sizes vary between 20 and 70.

Assessment

You will undertake projects and work on research problems that will have a strong emphasis on applied questions and practical approaches, and will be linked to real-world problems and experiences from our external collaborative partners. Upon successfully completing the MSc year (or equivalent training), you will progress to a three-year PhD to work on a project.
