The Psychotherapeutic Relationship 2: Development of Theory, Practice and Individual Development

CE9B9

Date TBC

Time TBC

Location TBC

This module focusses on the three key aspects of theory, practice and personal development through group process work. The theoretical concepts of this module are based on the unreal relationship, with an introductory element of object relations. The key theorists studied in this module are Freud and Jung, though other relevant psychodynamic theorists may be included (e.g., Malan and Della Selva, 2007). The module also exemplifies the centrality of 'personal within the professional' development of an integrative psychotherapist/psychotherapeutic counsellor. Through experiential exercises, reflection and group process, students are required to unfold the dynamics of the possibilities of unconscious processes. This occurs intra- and inter-personality. This form of learning is not without its demands and challenges. Formative assessment and feedback will be provided by the tutors, and students will also engage in peer feedback and reflection, most notably in the personal development ‘group process’ sessions and in clinical practice feedback. As with year 1 students engage in triad practicums on a weekly basis to enhance their burgeoning client frame. To help the development of students' HPI practice, there will be the opportunity for students to consider their supervised practice/placements with their teaching staff (as separate from clinical supervision). Also included in this facet of training will be teaching on working in time limited practice, EDI in psychotherapy, safeguarding, discussions on ethics, and discussions on the evolution of the students’ holistic phenomenological integration model of practice. This holistic phenomenological integration involves both an awareness of how theory integrates for clinical work, but also involves reflections on how the self of the therapist is integrating and how this personal integration aligns with the theories the trainee uses in practice.

This module will establish the theoretical foundation for the course. You will be asked to critically consider key philosophical ideas which underpin an Integrative (HPI) approach to psychotherapy and counselling. There is also a strong emphasis on Clarkson's relational model (working alliance/ real and unreal relationship), plus Orleans's & Gilbert's additional intercultural and coaching/mentoring modes of therapy. HPI is contextualised within a two person psychology which finds its focus in the nature of the therapeutic relationship.

To convert this into practice, we teach aspects of the theory and applications of a phenomenologically based person-centred, gestalt and existential approaches. There is an introduction to the unreal relationship. There will also be an introduction to how research can bring theories to life and how these can generate practice which results in therapeutic growth and change, and what their limitations might be.

Students on the Psychotherapist training route have to complete a Mental Health Pathway (alongside the ACP), as directed by UKCP accreditation requirements for trainee Psychotherapist. This module, which is taught solely online comprises:

Seven Saturdays or Sundays online where experts in psychiatry, psychology, mental health and general practice share their expertise and experience.
-30 hours of psychiatrically informed Mental Health work-based learning.
-A portfolio based on all learning about mental health during the year as well as relevant prior learning.

This module is taught online to enable the range of expert speakers inputting to the programme from around the country to participate - which is a crucial part of the module delivery. This also complements the face to face weekly input on the ACP and enables both a Hybrid model of delivery in line with the scope given for effective delivery of teaching by the University, as well as affording learners the opprtunity to join the sessions on a Saturday more easily
while they complete the onerous profesional requirements of this training.

Students on the Psychotherapeutic Counsellor training route will be able, and encouraged, to attend the Mental Health Pathway weekend events to support their learning and mental health knowledge though this will not be mandatory (and they will not be required to do the MHF Report or work based learning hours).
