Top Tips for your Research Funding Application

Need to apply for funding but need a little bit of advice?

Check out these top ten tips, which you can also find by following @WarwickPostgrad and #fundingapptoptips on Twitter.

1

Ensure you are committed to PhD study. Successful funding applications take a lot of hard work.

2

Familiarise yourself with the criteria of the funding for which you are applying.

3

Develop a realistic and detailed research proposal. Contact your department to check that we can offer supervision.

4

Familiarise yourself with the details and deadlines for the funding applications.

5

Have you got any publications? Have you been awarded any prizes? Consider which extracurricular activities you can use in support of your application.

6

Consider how best to present your academic record. Add extra details such as your ranking in your year group.

7

Choose referees carefully. Ideally, choose an academic who taught you and thinks highly of your work.

8

Ensure your application is neatly presented and structured. Keep to the space provided.

9

Ensure any required supporting documents are submitted with your application.

10

Have your application reviewed by someone familiar with your discipline and someone who is not. Your application should be persuasive to both.

Other things you need to know about applying for research funding

Many funding sources require a separate application, but for doctoral candidates a number of scholarships can be applied for via the application form for postgraduate admission to the University. The scholarships available via this route are currently the Chancellor’s International Scholarships, Wolfson Foundation Scholarships, CADRE Scholarships and WMS Scholarships. These scholarships are only open for applications during certain periods, so it is advisable to make a combined application for admission and for a scholarship during the open period (01 August – 12 January).

Please note that detailed information on all these awards (and some other others not listed here), as well as advice for your application, is available through the Warwick Graduate School website.
