Areas for PhD supervision

The IER research team brings together a breadth of research and labour market expertise from a variety of disciplines. We would be interested in supervising research students in: employer behaviour; globalisation and labour markets; mobility and migration; socio-economic and demographic change and the labour market; labour market classifications, assessment and forecasting; green skills and sustainable jobs; career trajectories and decision-making; apprenticeships, work-based learning and training; school-to-work transition and the graduate labour market; gender and the labour market; work-life balance, work-life conflict and wellbeing; job quality and innovation; digitalisation, technology and work; welfare and public policy.

Full-time: 4 years

(fees paid over 3 years)

Part-time: 7 years

(fees paid over 5 years)

Entry Requirements

2:i undergraduate degree (or equivalent) and a postgraduate qualification in the social sciences. Previous studies should have included training in social science methodology

English Language Requirements

Band B
IELTS overall score of 7.0, minimum component scores of two at 6.0/6.5 and the rest at 7.0 or above.

Additional Costs

Students need to cover any travel and subsistence costs associated with fieldwork for their research project. They will also need to pay for printing and binding of two soft-bound and one hard bound version of their thesis for submission.
