This one year teaching qualification is specially designed to prepare you for teaching in international settings, developing you into a highly reflective practitioner, equipped with the skills and knowledge to be a successful teacher. With a face-to-face induction in Thailand, led by experts from Warwick and Assessed Teaching against UK Teachers’ Standards. You’ll have ‘Live’ interactive online lectures every month and support from international school leaders and experts.

This one-year postgraduate course is specifically designed to prepare you for teaching in international settings. It will equip you to be a reflective, competent and professionally aware educator through a unique blended learning programme that includes:

  • An intensive five day face-to-face induction in Thailand led by Senior Teaching Fellows from Warwick.
  • ‘Live’ online sessions in all Phase Studies, Reflective Practice and Professional Practice modules throughout the year. These will take place at 7pm Bangkok time for 2 hours in length, bi-weekly and mainly in term time. Overall there are 17 online sessions covering a range of educational themes across both primary and secondary phases.
  • Completion of a Professional Digital Portfolio (PDP), with its enhanced evidence of reflection and final assessment against the UK Teachers’ Standards.
  • The completion of two Master’s level assignments, one based on a phase-related issue and one on a comparative international theme.
  • Teaching practice with assessment points and a summative lesson observation from a Warwick tutor.
  • Three personal tutorials led by staff at Warwick and on-going mentor support provided by schools throughout the year.

Phase Studies (primary or secondary education) 30-credits

You will follow a programme of sessions related to your area of phase and expertise. These sessions are designed to heighten your awareness of the pedagogical approaches related to each subject/phase specialism. This will help you adopt a range of approaches and strategies to ensure your teaching is sufficiently diverse to challenge or support as appropriate in an international education setting.

You engage critically and analytically with a range of theories and models which underpin effective teaching and learning. You'll develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to be an effective teacher. You will understand the impact this has on pupil progress in their subjects, building towards a vision for outstanding learning and teaching in your area of expertise that will underpin your practice on teaching placements.

Assessment will comprise of a summative 4000-word Master’s level assignment.

Reflective Practice 30-credits

You'll engage critically and analytically with a range of theories and models which underpin effective teaching and learning in international educational settings. You will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to be an effective teacher and understand the impact this has on pupil progress in a range of international contexts.

You'll also be introduced to skills and techniques to support your development as a reflective practitioner, gaining access to a wide variety of pedagogic styles and innovative methods for learning and teaching in international settings. Throughout the course, links between critical reflection and your subject specialisms will be emphasised, helping you to embrace the concept of a connected curriculum.

Assessment will comprise of a summative 5000-word Master’s level assignment.

Professional Practice 30-credits

This component consists of a minimum 90-day teaching placement in your specialist phase. Over these 90 days you will need to have completed a minimum of 144 hours of teaching, to groups of eight or more students. The placement will include regular meetings with your school mentor, as well as evaluations of professional practice through mentoring conversations on placement following lesson observations.

There are 2 components for the assessment of this module, both of which must be passed for the module to be completed.

  • Reflections which detail your progress towards the UK Teachers’ Standards which are evidenced in the Professional Digital Portfolio (PDP) – equivalent to 3000 words (pass/fail)
  • All practical teaching in the classroom must also be assessed against all the UK Teachers’ Standards (pass/fail)

Qualified Teacher Status in England and Wales is conferred by the Teaching Agency on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education (England) and the Minister for Education and Skills (Wales) and not by universities. The PGCE international programme does not, therefore, offer a licence to teach in the UK or elsewhere. We have assessment-only options (delivered in the UK) should you wish to gain Qualified Teacher Status. Please note that Assessment-only programmes have their own nationally-regulated course entry requirements and we recommend that you review these should you intend to progress to this programme following your PGCEi. You must hold an approved Bachelor’s degree with Honours at 2:2 or above, (or) equivalent level.

Primary trainees: Maths GCSE A-C or equivalent.

Your spoken and written English must be of an adequate standard for postgraduate study. If English is not your first language, you will need a minimum score of 6.5 or equivalent under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no less than 6.0 in any element. Scholarships and bursaries are available for teacher training.

Additional Course Costs

You will be required to attend the five day face-to-face induction in Thailand. This will incur additional costs. Students are expected to make their own accommodation and travel arrangements for attendance at the induction event.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided at the five day face-to-face induction, however breakfast and dinner will be at students' own expense. You may also incur costs associated with obtaining a relevant visa for permitted entry into Thailand. It is your responsibility to ensure you hold a relevant visa for attendance at the induction event.Should you fail your summative lesson observation carried out by a Warwick Link Tutor, you will incur a resit fee to cover the costs of arranging and carrying out a further assessment which will vary depending on the location of your educational setting.

Upon completing one of our courses, you will gain 90 credits at Master’s level. This allows you to fast-track to stage two of CTE’s Master’s degree, quickly progressing your professional development.

Career progression may be through taking responsibility for co-ordinating an area of the curriculum or leading a Key Stage, with next steps being a senior management role.
