Warwick's Engineering Department is consistently in the top ten of UK league tables. Join their Sustainable Energy Technologies MSc where you will gain in-depth and advanced knowledge of a diverse range of sustainable energy technologies, including wind, solar, fuel cells and bioenergy.


The development of sustainable and renewable methods for energy supply is a global priority, driven by the impacts of carbon-based fossil fuel use on the environment, as well as dwindling reserves of fossil fuels. The main challenges in the shift away from fossil fuel based power generation lie in the development of sustainable energy technologies, ranging from the engineering of new materials to the integration of these technologies into power distribution networks. This course provides the fundamental scientific and technical aspects of sustainable energy technology, introducing you to key enabling technologies, including electrical, electrochemical, mechanical and thermal aspects.

Teaching

The degree comprises eight taught modules and a project. The research project entails an in-depth experimental, theoretical or computational investigation into a topic chosen by the student in conjunction with an academic supervisor. Previous titles include: Developing and testing an improved solar thermal collector (for hot water); Gearbox design for wind turbines to withstand electrical faults; Energy footprint of power device fabrication.

Contact Hours

The MSc degree (totalling 180 credits) comprises:

  • Eight taught modules (15 credits each)
  • A research project (60 credits)

The typical workload for a 15-credit module is as follows:

  • 20-30 hours of lectures/seminars
  • 5 hours of laboratory work
  • 45 hours of private/directed study
  • 70 hours of assessed work

The research project is valued at 60 credits and students should plan to execute around 600 hours of work towards the completion of the project dissertation.

Class Sizes

Class sizes for lectures, practical laboratory sessions and seminars vary depending on the number of students taking the module.

Assessment

A combination of coursework and written examinations.


Minimum requirements 2:ii undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a relevant branch of engineering or science^

English language requirements Band A
IELTS overall score of 6.5, minimum component scores not below 6.0

Maths requirement: All applicants will be expected to know the prescribed mathematical concepts shown here. The onus is on the individual to ensure that they understand the required material in order to cope easily with the course. We are looking for competence in the majority of mathematics that is taught in the first and second year of an undergraduate Engineering or Physics course. We reserve the right to request that you undertake a short online test assessment.
